I took my car for a drive the other day and while backing up I could hear the rear chattering and then when driving straight it just felt like something was loose and making noise. I come in to park and notice leaking from the pinion seal so I pull the cover and there is no fluid.
There was a decent amount of play if I were to put my hand on the yoke and shake it. Ended up having to take the whole rear apart and replaced both the pinion seal and the bearing. I just reinstalled everything as it came out and then re-tightened the pinion nut to the specified 30-40 in lbs.
Now there is no looseness in the yoke and no leaking (good).
But now when I just took it for a drive the car still chatters with full amount of fluid and has a horrible whining noise and just an overall looseness. What did I do wrong? Is it partly because the fluid is still trying to recirculate thoroughly?
Every thing was put back tight and the way it came out but now it seems I have to start over again. Any ideas?
