Rear Springs. Help !

Hey guys. Going to finish my install of umi upper and lower control arms on my car today. I was wondering if any one could give me a quick answer on this one. My car has different rear coil springs in the rear. Lowered the rear about 1 1/2 inches. The springs have rubber insulators on the top where they rest but the lower part of the spring where it rest on the rear does not. Should there be rubber on the bottom of the springs like the top ???

wont make any difference how it points as the spring movement is straight up and down and the pigtail on rear coils is wound flat at both ends...that said out of habit i do put the tail ends in same direction and its usually to the left because with comp eng shocks the shocks extend too far and the spring sits loose when on a lift , with tail to left the last coil is on the outside facing back and it tends to keep the spring leaning forward and aligned to the top perch so when it gets lowered it falls into place , better fix is weld a tube to top perch so springs cant slide out

on a variable rate like a cargo coil it does matter how you put it in top or bottom (not how you put the tail) , the close coils should be to the top

on a front coil it matters how you position them top or bottom because only one side is coiled flat the other isnt , and on front it matters how you orient the loose pig tail on the bottom as the arm is a pivot and the loose tail needs to be closest to the pivot point , the stock lower arm is formed to help get it correct and has two holes to let you know where to put the end of the tail

The GM Chassis Manual is very specific about the pig tail orientation for stock springs.

Hey guys. Thanks for the info. I too have the problem of the springs dropping when not lifting the car by its rear. Was thinking of trying some rubbers on the bottom of the springs to hold them in there a bit tighter. When you guys say pigtails to the left you mean both tails facing the divers side looking at the rear of the car?

both of the tails at top to the left (driverside)
the manual shows it (doesnt state it ) in diagram but it also shows an open pigtail tail spring which was not used on our cars
if you add to prevent fallout you also increase your ride height

other models had a rubber (like the pinion snubber ) that went into the frame to prevent fallout , i usually add a short piece of 2-2.25 tube to the upper perch

There are rubber coil spring isolators used on the bottom of the rear springs....
These may take up some of the "slack" you're experiencing.

Hey just wanted to give a shout out and say thanks for the replies. Car rides great. The springs only call for isolators on the top of the springs but I ended up putting ones on the top and bottom. Worked out nice took up some slack and the fit seems a lot better. Later people.
