I'm the original owner of an 87 GN and I have to tell you that the "rear tire rubber evaporation" problem has been a mystery for over 25 years. Some of the smartest folks in the country have not been able to figure it out. Some even tried radical changes in hopes of combating the dreaded "disappearing tire rubber" like replacing the Buick badges with those from a Mustang, but it didn't work. I know guys that have rented the race track just to do scientific studies on this phenomenon. They couldn't figure it out, in fact most of what they did just made it worse.

So, just accept it. "It is what it is" and thats all I have to say about that.

When I bought my gn new in '87 my rear tires lasted exactly one week. Twas the damnedest thing

Well I'm just glad that others are experiencing the same problem and it isnt just an isolated incident!

Another problem you might see is black marks in your neighborhood

man this thread is all sorts of F--ked up!

dissapearing rubber and trannys all in the same place.... no wonder my wife thinks this is a porn site.

That's a very good point and I'm glad you added it as a symptom of this mysterious anomaly. I also think its good that this issue is being documented so the newbees are made aware before they find out the hard way.
Just remember that you're not alone. Thanks to sites like this, we have a support group to lean on. o_O

Wish we would have had this support group earlier, wonder how many interventions it would have prevented? My second set of tires lasted a day or so less then the first, and since then I've been known as turbotroy the floorboard boy!

However since I'm still here, there is a scientific name -implies treadus disappearus

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one suffering from this. Another rarely discussed symptom is the lack of fellow car enthusiast interaction. I always see them zippin' around and givin' it some revs...until I ease up next to them. All of the sudden, they drive like my sister in her Volvo. Strangest thing...

Try tall hard compound Snow tires!!!...(an 80's Cutluss g-body down here in FL runs them an runs 10.80's,Has pro stock mountain motor in it though!, gold in color, vinal back half,Sleeper) 8^)

Wow! Snow tires huh, who woulda figured! Mickey Thompson sgtreet slicks would'nt hook, maybe my next set will be a set of 32x10.50 super swamper tsls. :D
