It might help to know your combo, and goals. If your goal is to have your car the quickest that it can be in the 1/4 mile, then I'd leave the stock 342 in. For me, my goal was to have a very streetable car, with a big 28" tall (275-60-15) tire out back to help hook on the crappy roads around here. This combo of a 373 gear and a 28" tire, keeps the final ratio to only about 10% lower than stock. This can also let you get away with a "slightly" tighter converter and still spool fine. My car gets over 20 mpg on the freeway, and is fine on 800 mile trips. At the track, my car ran a 11:17 @ 122 mph. This was at about 6100 rpms, with a loose Art Carr 3200 non LU converter.
Ya, I might pick up a tenth with the 342 gear, but to me it's not worth loosing the streetability on a 99% driven street car to switch back. I have run this gear and tire on my car for at least five years now. It worked great when it was a 13 second car, and still works great at the current (507 RWHP) power levels.
In closeing, If your dead set on running a 28" tall tire on a street car, and have the money, then do it. If your not going to run a big tire, then spend the dough on alky or something else.

It will kill your topend. There are plenty of cars running in the nines on the 3.42 gears and a 28 tall tire. I wouldnt change them.

1/8th mile 373,390 or 410 gear will help out for sure. 1/4 mile stick with 342

ok.i will stay with the 342's..so what can i do to make the car faster without killing my pocketshould i bring the boost up? i already have the TT chip plus 30 lbs injectors.
Your car running those numbers you have alot you can do. Turning up the boost is not the answer. What is your combo?
Its all stock.well i have 30 lbs injectors high flow gas pump.thtas all,
After you get tires, get a Cone K&N filter, free flowing exhaust, octane and a race chip, then slowly turn the boost up whle monitoring knock.
A TR can run low 12's with the above mods with the stock gears. No need to change them, ever.
I have the TT chip.

Something better then stock, Mandrel bent 2.5... Do a search on PYPES, not a bad kit at all
you have a scanmaster at the very least to do simple tune with?

A hooker exhaust is fine with a Gutted cat ot test pipe and good straight thru mufflers like ultraflows.
