Intersection Congestion Leads To Police Ticketing Drivers - Miami News Story - WPLG Miami

Red-light-tickets are incentive not to block intersections, and allow other traffic to flow per traffic design.

The problem down here in FL is that the states motto is "the longest yellow lights in the country". I kid you not. Yellow lights are longer than it takes me to run the 1/4 mile in my GN. Last April I was in NYC and it just astounded me on how short the yellows were. Like .10 seconds. Dont blink or you'll miss the yellow. If the jurisdictions want to put in red lite cameras or stop red lite running than they need to shorten the yellows and get the word out. Just like what was stated in that story the people know the traffic patterns and routines. For a jurisdiction to just come in and start reciting the law and how it's being abused is just a revenue maker IMO. At least in Orlando the signs and warnings are posted at the trouble spots and a certain length or grace period is given before the ticket writing starts.

Several years ago, my mom told be about a report a tv station in Phoenix did on people going through the intersections after turning red. She said that the Station found the average for the last car through the intersection was 8 seconds after the light turned red.

I'm wondering. It is illegal to drive without license plates on your car. But is it illegal to place your state-provided license plate on your car upside down? or backwards with the shiny backing facing outward? Or upside down AND backwards?

Hmm....

Does anyone have the lights we do here in Cedar Rapids? Where all four sides become red for a sec and then one direction is allowed to go. I was told that they use this because if a driver was going to run a red no one would be in the intersection at the same time.

The semi in the intersection happend to me. I was behind a huge semi waiting to turn left. The light is a short one and he took a long time to negotiate the turn. It turned red while I was following him. There was a cop on the road to my right. He ticketed me for a red light violation. I went to court on this one. I won. I told the judge (rightly so) I could not see the light since the truck was blocking my view once I was in the intersection. At least the judge had a brain. I tried to expain to the cop but he was just on a ticket hunt.
No cameras here. Good thing, I think they would be destroyed by target shooters.

Pronto,
I understand. Here is some advice from Jim.

Sure they can be avoided. I don't ride directly behind an 18 wheeler for starters.
I don't enter an intersection if there is any chance of getting "stuck" in the
intersection like you may have.

What if it was me BLOCKING an intersection (as you may have unintentionally), and you want to cross it, intersecting-wise when the light finally turns green. Well, you can't because I'm in your way blocking the intersection!!! Worse, it could be a firetruck or ambulance who can't cross, because "the car and truck in front of me made it, so why can't I"??
We have traffic signs in some places that say "don't block intersection", that aren't photo-enforced.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but something tells me that you will handle that (and other) intersections differently and not be caught on film like you did.

Until you've been T-boned, or blocked from passing an intersection, you'll have a new found sympathy for keeping the photo enforced intersections.

I usually drive as fast as I can to outrun the flash of the photo.

Miami is the worst place I have been for people running red lights. If you go immediately upon the light turning green you will get hit. I have seen as many as 4 and 5 cars go through after the light is green. Washington DC is another. If you stop on yellow you will get a cussing and a blow by. It's like a contest.
It's as if some bad driving habits in certain cities have become the norm.
I too got caught behind a semi turning left in Atlanta and got flashed but never got the summons. The truck was probably in the picture as well or it may have been the out of state tags. At any rate I'm grateful.

You got WAY lucky. I'm going to try that "reasoning" next time I get a ticket and see if it flies...ANY ticket...mabey even speeding.

That may not work if you are a repeat offender :(

The interection I got nabbed at is very strange. It's a jughandle to reverse direction with a road entering the handle part. At the lights you can go left/right on a divided road or straight ahead. I was in the handle in the left lane so I could reverse my direction right behind a semi. I had no choice but to follow it. As it turned right it blocked the signals on the left and center hung ones. Like I said, the judge was sane. Probably had used that jughandle before so understood the circumstances.
