My son bought a used car and it smells like cigarette smoke. What is the best way to eliminate the smell, not just mask it? Thanks.

Tried to edit above post, but 10 minute time limit was up.

He has already used Febreze, but it did not work that well.

I would say you need to get the interior steam cleaned: seats, carpet, door panels, and allow to sit with the windows open for a few days. Might even have to replace the headliner. Maybe check with a local detail shop:)

Thanks tim and gn. Will try the Lysol spray first and then see about steam cleaning if the Lysol doesn't work.

I had used it on a cloth coat to get rid of bad cigarette smell and it worked well. Let us know how it works out for the car. I may have to just use some to freshen up the Buicks, the air fresheners never seem to last too long.

Find someone with an ozone machine. A dealership I am familiar with uses one for their used cars. They charge about $60 and it takes several hours but it works great.

Don't forget to clean in the vents as best you can too. Spraying some OdoBan in them would help.

alright a used car salesman told me this one and it works pretty good.

Get some coffee(ground) and put them in coffe filters about 1/2 - 3/4 full and put them on the floor boards front and rear (4 of them) and then on the seats, etc. Then roll the windows up and let it sit in the sun on a warm day. Not perfect but it does help

I had bought a T-type with the same problem. What I did was first clean the car as best I could with hot liquid soup and water in a bucket and swab down the dash, doorpanels and all plastic moldings. Then pull the seats and do the same with the carpet. The scent was still there, only now its seemed like it got worse when those old smells were brought back to life with hot soapy water.
At any rate I went to the gas station and bought 5 vanillarama air fresheners. Took them out of the plastic wrap and let them sit in the air vents of the car when the car was at operating temps. Then turned the heat on full blast and kept the windows rolled up for 20mins. The only thing to elimunate odors is something that is more powerful of a scent. And when the heat hits those air fresheners the scent is so strong that it inbeds itself into the fabric overpowering the scent of smoke. Then I just left the windows open over night and within 2 days the scent of smoke was gone, then eventually after a week, so was the scent of the air freshener.
