What is the best method to go about repainting the headlight bezels and grill black?

Any suggested cleaners or primers to use? Also what shade of black? Gloss, semi gloss, etc?

Thanks..

Dang Warren, I keep replying to your threads. :D I painted my headlight bezels. The best IMO is to use satin black lacquer; enamel tends to come out in blobs rather than a fine spray. I like the Mar-Hyde brand called Black Satin Trim Coating or something similar. I scratched up the bezels with a gray Scotchbrite pad (superfine) and then applied the paint. One of the keys is to do mulitple coats. The paint is so thin that keeping it too wet will cause a run.

Practice a few passes on an old rental car front license plate and you'll see what I mean. Then you can come back and do a good job on your stuff. The body shop might just donate the needed supplies to your cause. Good luck.

Painting Plastic

I use SEM products exclusively on plastic parts.
They make a solvent that cleans all the wax and road stuff off the part. [I use "Purple Stuff" to get the worst of the crud off first] You keep washing it til the water no longer beads up, dry it well. Then, as John said, scuff it w/ a Scotchbrite [fine] pad]. You then wipe the surfaces w/ their "plastic prep". It makes the surface of the part sticky for a short time. You then apply a LIGHT coat, allow to dry, then apply a heavier, wet coat and let dry. The longer it dries, the better the durability. Spray bomb technology at it's finest!!!:D :D :D

Mine's been on my car for 3 yrs now, and looks great!

your best bet is to buy the new reproduction Grille and headlight bezels from me.worldofmotorworks.com

Part #39143 . Used it on my new bezels four years ago. They still look just like new. Very hard stuff.
