resetting the piston on brake calipers

my friend is replacing the brake pads on his 88 Maxima. don't worry he's not a ricer and thinks turbo buicks are very nice cars. anyway, he took the old pads off and went to put the new ones on. but he wasn't able to to because the pistons were pushed out too far. my question is, how do you push them back in so he can put the pads on and use his car? also, he used a tool that compresses the pistons down but it did not work. they would not pe pushed in. thanks

If they don't compress with the tool they might be frozen. They should compress even if it takes a little effort.

Good luck,

Ron
