What should rev limit be for a stock block. Want to set my limiter so I dont go overboard.

Scott

if you are using the MSD, 6,000 is the lowest you can set it...with stock cam 5000, with better cam 55-5800...if you want everything to stay together, 5500 is a good number

Dum question, but how do you set the Rev limiter on these cars?

Stock ignition it's programmed into the chip.

You say the msd only limits down to 6000. I have a question, I am newly installing my accell dfi. Does that Have a rev limiter also built in like a computer chip? Or am I going to have to rely on the msd?

Scott

I would ASSume the Accel has an adjustable rev limiter but cannot say for sure...I know the FAST systems do

Scott: Congratulations on having the longest signature info known to mankind! ;) Why are you running DFI? Are you running better than low 10's? The reason I ask is; I've seen numerous examples of tuning trouble (ie totally a pain in the butt) with the old style ACCEL DFI, and yet have seen many folks (locally) that have run all the way down to 10.00's with the stock ECM. If you were to use the stock ECM, you could simply have your rev limit programmed in with the chip, and never have to worry about it. Once I found your injector size in your sig, 50#ers, you can run those without having the stock ECM injector drivers modified. Just a thought...

Well for one I got tired of the chips ;). I wanted to be able to punch up my own settings. However, your the first one that I ever heard say the accel dfi was hard to tune? Did you have bad experience with this? Can ya elaborate?:D

Scott:
My evaluation of the ACCEL DFI is not based on personal use, but rather seeing many of my fellow local GN buddies use it, and regret it forever afterwards. However, that is based on the old system from 5+ years ago, where you had to be a rocket scientist to tune it and get it right. Most of them would have to get Lawrence Conley here in Houston to line it out for them, which was fine if he was around, but dang hard to accomplish when you're out on a Saturday night and fixing to run a race for money, only to have the car spit and fart all the way down the street due to weather changes since the last setting. Here in Houston our weather conditions change daily more often than a pigeon craps, which means that the DFI had to be reset and changed equally as often. Again, I'm basing this on the older versions that did not resemble the newer Fel-Pro systems. Anyway, as I mentioned, I've got several friends running their Buicks well into the 10's w/ stock ECM and custom chips, and even one friend that consistently runs 10.0's w/ stock ECM on a Stage motor. It just seems like a whole lot less of a headache, unless you're building a trailer beast and only run at the track, and are willing to spend time programming everytime you go out. Well,,, you asked...;)

my race chip for my old 50's was at 6200

i was bouncing off the limiter kinda often and its not broke yet

Unless you've attended to the bottom end woes (block girdle, billet caps etc...), I would keep the rpm's under 6000 for sure. These 109 blocks were never intended to make the kind of HP numbers we're making, let alone wrap up into the 6000+ rpm range! On my old motor I had a girdle and billet caps and would routinely shift at 6000 rpm for every gear. I also had roller rockers to help keep the valves in their place at those rpm's.
