Ring compressors

What brand and what is the part number of the piston ring
compressor for our cars, and which ones are good ones, and
where did you purchase them, thanks, Ron

I use a Blue Point Set from Snap-On. Its like an adjustable pair of pliers with different size bands for different bore sizes. Works real well!!! Frank

Frankg, do you know if cornwall tools carries anything similar
to the one that you use from snap-on, the cornwall guy stops
in to my lube shop about every two weeks or so, thanks, Ron

I like the adjustable aluminum ones from Tavia and others..they are a tapered aluminum cylinder like the ones dedicated to a specific bore size, but they are split with a hose clamp to allow slight adjustability. I have not found one of these for a 3.8 bore size yet though.

I have a couple of the cheap spring steel jobs that you cinch down on the piston; they work OK but if you chamfer the tops of the bore sometimes they are hard to keep evenly on the deck surface and the top or 2nd ring slips into the chamfer and you have to try again...and again.

One of the best ring compressor sets I have used. The plier will lock when you squeeze, tap in your piston. Easy as that. Do not use one of those universal ring compressors that you have to tighten up. You may not today, but you will end up breaking a ring.

Ron, not sure about Cornwell but my blue point set looks pretty much the same as the one pictured above. Frank
