For Robin L Buddi----------In responce to your Inquiry about Riviera T-Type gear ratios,my 85 has 3:15 gears, but I think 79`s had 3:35 gears.Ask your G.M. dealer if they are still avail.Keep tuned to this thread,as other T-Riv owners will likley add some info to your problem. What you really need to do is forget about your 5.0 Riv. & get a T-Type with the 3.8 turbo/fuel Inj..It has a lot more possibilitys for power. My T-Riv is bone stock,133k miles, and out runs the 5.0L ,and still gets 25mpg!!! Jack

I believe all T-Type Riviera's 79-84 have 3:36 gears.Mine does.If you can find them please let me know.I need a spare set .Thanks

Mine also has 3.36 gears... I do know of a few guys running t-type Riv's with the 3.15's though. I belive one is a convertible so maybe that's why.

Hey Tony, I found a spare gearset at a local wrecking yard a few years back. It was an '83 T-type Riv... Rare find!!

How's that locker working out for you?

Scott,
Long time not hearing from you.I lost your E-mail address.please sent it.Lost all last season, but i'm back at it again with new motor.I hope to drag it out soon, mabe to Atco in April for a new record

Riv T-TYPE ratios

Ok guys now you have my curiosity up about mine and others Ive seen in bone yards out here, just how do I tell what ratio is in there without counting teeth. How about the option code tag in the trunk ??? What code number would I be looking for ??

This info is good for 1985, can not guarantee it, but should be same for earlier years. tag in trunk would be:

F47 2.73
F45 2.93
F57 3.15
FW4 3.36

Or you can look at the pumpkin itself, looking at the cover of pumpkin there is a tab of the casting on the oil pan side of pumpkin with a four digit number (date) and single letter

L 2.73
K 2.93
M 3.15
N 3.36

Hope that helps

codes,diff`s,T-RIV`S

Thanks t-riv,ya got me squared away w/the codes,ya I got 3;15 alright.Thanks again-------Jack

For what it is worth dept. I have owned 6 turbo Rivs and as near as I can tell I have never seen or heard of a 3.36 in an 85. All of the 82-84 cars had the 3.36 but the 85's all had the 3.15. Anybody have a 85 with the 3.36? I have the dealer order book and the way I read it a 3.15 was standard and the 3.36 was optional. The 84 book says 3.36 was standard with the turbo. I would like to think I am the expert when it comes to turbo Rivs so any help you guys can give would be appreciated. Thanks Eric Fisher

Eric, my posted info above is from the factory service manual showing the 3.36 but who knows, doesnt look to good that any 85's came with that. I have two 85's with 3.15, blackhawk38 has two I think are 3.15 (added a 3.36 though), turbojack has one and you have one, so thats 6 of approx. 1100 so not off to a good start, have to wonder why Buick did that for the last year of that style, blackhawk38 told me it sure made a difference in the convertible, though he is still trying to dial in the trans. Too bad Buick did'nt make that style till 87 like the regal , that would have been cool.

For anyone that needs it.............Keith Mease in NJ has a complete transaxle from an 84 T Type Riv for sale. He only wants $50 for it. Call him at 609-518-8917

Change gears from 3:15 to 3:36 ???

I wonder If any of you guys have made this gear change to 3:36`s. Is it worth the trouble ?

turbojack, Since I have both versions I can tell you its worth the trouble. Even if you put it in numbers that make sense(i.e. less than 10% increase). The best way I can say why is the with the 3.36, in a heavy car like the Riv you will notice the difference in the way the car takes off from a start in both part throttle and WOT. These little V-6s make a ton of torque down low in the RPM band and anything you can do to increase the torque multiplication is a benefit. You will also find just cruising around town is more enjoyable as it seems you dont have to give it a lot of gas to maintain a steady speed. Also I used to acheive a even lower ratio when I drag race it with smaller diameter tires. I.e. going to a 225/45/15 is equal to going with a 3.60 ratio(with the 3.36) but the bad part is the ride gets harsh with the low profile so by switching back to the stock 235/70/15 you get the speed and comfy ride with the 3.36. 3:36 gears--sound real good to me !!

Tuubofish38---Sounds like you`ve been around the block a few times on this.I`ve got the Riv for sale right now ($1700.00),but I really do like the ride and perf. It has.You see I need the $ for my T-Regal project right now.really torn between selling it or keeping it,We`llllll enough of that for now,Thanks again for your input-----Jack
