Rubber steering wheel

Hey guys strange question but when did buick start covering the sport steering wheels with leather. My wheel looks to be a rubber unit. It appears to be the original charcoal to match the dash and column and has the spokes covered a little further up than the later wheels.

I believe it was 84 for the GN.

My '82 GN has a leather wrapped wheel. Like yours, the spokes are more covered than later wheels. I believe both styles were available.

The leather doesn't hold up as well as the rubber. And if you pull the leather off, you're left with rubber wheel.

The leather and rubber wheels look a lot alike. Many of the "leather" wheels I see on ebay are actually rubber.

Do the rubber cores of the leather wheels have fake stitching?

Is there any rhyme or reason what cars got a leather wrapped wheel I don't remember seeing it as an option.
