Who has the best portable sand blaster at a reasonable price?
Not a cabinet model, I have a small one now and it's not quite up to the task. I need something I can use outdoors...

Pressure or siphon? Siphon from body shop supply store or Eastwood works with a large CFM compressor. I've done much with mine but gotta be big CFM.

I bought a pressurized 60lb. sand blaster from Harbor Freight and salvage for about $60. Works great and it came with everything but the sand! It only took me about 5 minutes to blast the bottom foot of a door inside AND out!

What I have now is the siphon type, and your right John it requires a lot of air. Maybe I'm falling into the old bigger is better trap. I think I'll run by my local Freight Harbor and take a peek at a pressure model, I'm sure Sears would have one as well.

If you have used both how does the pressure perform as opposed to the siphon? Is it going to work the hech out of my compressor as well?

In my opinon ther is no comparison between siphon and pressurised! With the pressurised you can control the mix on air to sand and it is way faster! You will need a descent size compressor with either. It is a combination of air and the abrasive that removes the rust and or paint and the scfm's the compressor puts out the better. I have a 7hp with a 60 gallon tank and it works OK.

That's basically what I was thinking, I think my compressor is up to it, but the siphon model just seems to take a lot of air. What I would consider to be more than normal for the amount of area your able to work.

Quik work...

I use a blast media called "Starblast". It's made by DuPont. It cuts MUCH faster and cleaner than sand, and leaves a nice surface for primer. Last 50# bag I bought was about $8.00.
Play sand and clean sand specifically for blasting doesn't come close to this stuff....................Play sand is NASTY, and has far too much dirt in it to be good to use..
Right back the old saying, "You get what you pay for"...;)

Faster cutting = less load time on the compressor too!!

In fact, Starblast works so well, we use a 50/50 mix in our glas bead cabinet..Cleans MUCH faster, and the glas beads leave the surface smoother than blast only.....:)

If you going to do big jobs i.e. car frames, suspension parts than go pressurized. Either will give your compressor a work out so if it comes down to a few extra dollars take into account how much higher your electric bill is going to be and pick the system that gets the most done in the least amount of time.

Who carries "Starblast" ?? I'm using mid-grade blasting sand now, or so the bag says. It's made by Bonsal, same people I get plaster products from. I think if they would have put the crap in the media bags they do in the mortar bags I would have been done by now

That's what I had in mind, if that don't cut it, I'll put a 3/4" orifice in my hopper gun turn up the psi and use pea rock for media........:D

I would look in the fone book under abrasives.. In your neck of the woods, sandblast products used on boats should be in good supply...:D
