A buddy just bought an 84 Monte with a non original SBC in it. Where could we look on the block to find what year the engine is from? Thanks

front pass side, tab (ledge) from block under head, may have to clean it up to read, if ground down you can get ref of the block from back casting "behind drivers head on bell housin" IE 010 also quick look at heads be em heavy or light casting "bolts on lower head the casting gos straight across for heavy and wavy for light casting"

pull valve cover off and grab casting numbers from head..prolly diff heads but the casting will give some info...last 3 digits are all you need aka 882, 881, 487

etc etc

What site give you info on the Chevy engine's, so that i can look up my engine. Im working on putting a 96ish 350 in a Turbo T/A(81). Im plannig on putting turbo's on it.

There is a julian date code on the rear passenger side of the block (numeric character followed by an alpha character, followed by one or two numeric characters). Then if you provide me with a casting number from the drivers side of the block, I can pretty much determine the year. Also if the engine is carbureted, there is a casting number along the drivers side of the original Q-jet carb. There is also casting codes on the front machined suface of the passenger front side of the block (behind the alternator), where the heads meet the block. A protion of the VIN that the vehicle the engine came from is also on that machined surface. Start looking, I think I can help.
