How well does turbolink work on hot airs? What all will it do for me?

No direct experience, but it depends on your goals.

It runs of the ALDL connector and at 1.25 frames/sec, it is S-L-O-W
For just basic tuning, it is fine.
For performance tuning and problem solving, it is inadequate IMO.

I still use the OTC4000 at times for basic diagnostics.
For serious tuning, I use PL (24 fps)

It will help you with some parameters but I think it's very limited amount of information you can get because the the limitations of the 84/85 ecm. Not a lot of data provided. But will help you set IAC and tps.

It seems that it would be a better tool for me if I switch to the 86/87 ecm, right.

Depends on your goal, but, in general terms "Yes".
Now, before you ask , read the sticky for ECM conversion info.

Its like you were reading my mind.;) As far as goals...I guess I have none. Its just a weekend warrior. I just want it to run the best it can and keep it pretty close to stock. I just want a driver/weekend car show kind of car that will probably never see any actual track time  .

Your goals have been stated. As long as your 84 runs fine as you indicated above leave it alone. In the near term you will have to upgrade to the 86/87 ECM, new chip and convert to the 86/87 IGN system, and MAF sensor with translator. The MAT sensor can be programmed out on the new 87 chip. You will know when your time has come. Take care and when your car gets there let us know. Take care- Brad
