i'm in the process of getting an 86-87 turbo motor ready to put into my 87 limited. the motor is currently in an 85 cutlass body. i want to get a scan tool to hook up while the motor is still in the cutlass because i know nothing about the motor ( milage etc...) so that i can check things such as oil pressure etc. the motor sounds to have great compression when turning over but i am fixing fuel line problems at the moment so all i have done is cranked the motor for a few seconds with ether b4 i bought the car to be sure the motor ran. which scan tool would be best for just keeping a check on things when i first start running the motor...i have seen screen shots for scan master but none of the others. i have a newer lap top and also an older laptop with serial port so i should be ok running any of them , just dont know which would be best. thanks for any help.

What you need to do is buy a powerlogger, that uses the usb port for the newer laptop. You wont; be able to check oil pressure, but you will be able to check and record how the tune is on the car and if any sensor is reading abnormal. You can buy them from full throttle' site.

Thanks for the reply. i did just that. i bought a powerlogger last week but while i was waiting for it to come in the mail the motor just died one day and wouldnt start back. no dash lights, motor wouldnt turn over, it did nothing when the key was turned. then found out the ecm got wet so i ordered another one here and just got it today and havent went out to test it yet. hopefully the ecm was the problem and i can get the PL hooked up in the next few days.

A wet ecm is a bad thing, but it sounds like you have a bad battery/starter connection causing no power in the car.
