On top of the right rear frame rail, sometimes you need a mirror or lift the body to see it.

There's a VIN# stamped on the top of the frame below the drivers door. It's a pita to read. You can see it with a small mirror or use some modeling clay and press it on top of the frame so the number imprints in the clay. You will probably have to clean the top of the frame with some scotchbrite to see it with all of the grime that has built up over 20 years.

And I assume the cowl tag is missing too.

You're screwed. The frame is the only place left and you're going to have to lift the body and clean all of the crud to see those numbers. And it's only the last 6 digits so its really no help at all. If by chance you do get those numbers post back here and I'll see if I can come up with the rest of the VIN for you. The Regals built in Pontiac MI have a characteristic last 6 digits so I should be able to narrow down the full VIN or at least tell you its a Cutlass or MC frame.

Does that help?

Thanks

In a way it does. I thought the entire VIN was there but its missing the last half. Thats the body number there and its different than the VIN. I can tell you its a 87 GN with T-tops and if I read it correctly it was built on April 09. Maybe somebody can confirm that H09D build date code. I can never remember how that on goes. Maybe its 4th week of September?

If the car still has the original trans, look on the side of the trans just above the pan. The number is stamped on a pad on the left side. It's pretty small so you will most likely have to clean the pan rail to see it.

Do you know which side?

Thanks ill have to look!

Did you look under the trunk lid for the RPO code sticker?

Drivers side for the tranny partial VIN.

Check inside the doors for a build sheet

My car was bought as a recovered theft and no VIN plate. I got lucky when I found a paper build sheet with VIN and option codes inside the passengers side door.

This made my day.

Vin plate

I also recently recovered my t type which had been missing for almost 2 yrs. the vin on the dash and all other id tags including the trim plate on the cowl was missing. I got lucky because the car had the original engine and the last 8 numbers of the vin were stamped on it. I was issued a replacement vin for the car by the DMV to rivet in the the door pillar but I guess the value of the car will never be what it should as a re'vin. Is there anyway I can get a replacement vin plate for the dash and the trim plate for the cowl.

where on the engine is it stamped?

that sound identical to my car :(

my title is clean though :)

The VIN is stamped on the engine block on the left side of the bellhousing face. There is a flat spot it is stamped on. Here is a pic showing where.
