After installing another transmission last year & a new shifter cable, my shifter handle won't engage 1st gear. Feels like the cable is adjusted a bit too tight.
Car shifts fine in all gears in Automatic mode.
Is there a way to make an adjustment which would enable it to engage manuall in 1st gear?

thx

dave

First, check your linkage. Remove the shifter cable from the transmission and make sure that you can select 1st gear. Then put your shifter in 1st gear. Make sure there are no mechanical binds. I have a B&M with a bolt that mechanically locks out the shifter from going too far. (3 speed vs 4 speed) Some aftermarket cables are way too long. Re-install the shifter cable on the tranny and try to go thru the gears to make sure that the shifter and tranny can go into 1st. Double check whatever cable securing device that you have on the transmission so that it doesn't or haven't slipped.

Check adjustment on the rod that goes to the steering column also.

Had the same issue for a while when my linkage to the steering column was out of adjustment. As posted earlier you should probably take a look at that.
