ok guys this is my first post and i need all the help i can get . i was told to come here for advice on the 200 4r tranny . ok first off i have a 85 monte carlo ss with a very mild 350. my problem is about 3 weeks ago i was driving home when the car shuddered and i lost every gear including reverse so i had a local shop do a rebuild on it well they got it running again but the problem im having is it holds first gear at normal throttle until about 3000 rpm at which point it skips 2nd and slams into 3rd .now it does this at very light throttle but manages to go into 2nd for about 2 seconds then its right into 3rd and this all happens at about 20mph . i talked to dave at turbobuick.com and he said it could be the governor spring im just looking to find out if there could be anything else that could cause this. so any advice yall could give me would be great becuz when monday comes around its going to be going to a better tranny shop that actually knows what their doing and if any of yall live in the san antonio texas area stay away from lugos transmission on s. presa

The band is not holding .Easy test.Put shifter in 3rd and take off .When it is in 3rd pull the lever to 2nd.Is it revvingtoo high? Its really in 1st because the band is not holding.Test 2 .Does it upshift into 2nd in the manual lo position? If not then its a Band problem.

if i put it in 2nd and drive like that it goes into 2nd and drives fine its only when its in drive or overdrive that it skips second gear

The only difference is there is more psi in lo and d2.do the test and i can advise you futher.

on my grand national it sounded kind of like that but it would jump through the gears like crazy probably a good 100 feet from the line id be in 4th gear... rediculous it ended up just being my kick down cable to my trans i had to adjust it a little... give it a shot

If you feel like driving a little we have a good tranny builder here in North Texas. It's north of Fort Worth but I think you'll be more than happy if Jake works on it.

ok chris i tried putting it in 3rd then downshifting into 2nd and it does go into second only reason i know its second is becuz i even down shifted into 1st and it went into 1st and i tried putting it in 1st then manually shifting to 2nd it took it awhile but it went into 2nd once in 2nd it drove fine so now we know 2nd is there so now what

Dave said when you called him, you gave him completely different symptoms which led him to advise you of a gov spring issue.

He told me what the problem is after reading this thread but it went over my head:rolleyes:

Chris will get you sorted out

should i have the new tranny shop just fix whatever is causing the problem or just do a complete rebuild since i really dont know what the first shop did ?

either way it needs to be pulled out.if you want to continue testing do a wot 1/2 shift with psi gage installed and see what it does on the gage.

yea i think im just going to have them do a rebuild on it that way at least i know it was done right thanks for the advice guys and if you have any advice on what i should do for the rebuild please let me know

well im gonna have them do a regular rebuild on it that way i can get my car back becuz it is my d/d but i found a guy thats willing to sell me his 200 4r for $50 so im gonna buy that one and do the rebuild myself on that one so i can learn how to and i can build it the way i want it built

ok well i got my car back and david husek was right i was a missing governor spring but now i have a new problem it wont down shift at part throttle or wot this is driving me crazy i cant win with this thing

Man there seems to be very few out there that can get them trannys right.. it doesnt seem like rocket science but guys like Dave, Lonnie, Chris and other old timers spent years of trial and error before they got em to stick.

And your car aint putting out a fraction of the power ours are... get ahold of Charlie, and take it to his guy in Texas.

i wish i could take it to charlies tranny guy but i dont ever have time im either at work all day or at home with my son

Well Jake has a good deal going right now. Tranny good to 11
's for something like $1300 if I remeber right. If you want his number PM me and I'll send it to you. He may be able to arrange something with you. He's on the board as Jakeshoe.

i have no way of getting the car out there thats my problem and i dont trust the way this tranny is acting to make that long of a trip even if i had time to take it so either way im screwed and i wish i could afford to order a tranny from either david husek , ck performance , or extreme automatics but frankly right now i cant afford it and i really cant be without my car any more i just wish there was a decent tranny shop near by that could atleast get everything to act right

Well Jake may be able to ship it to you. The easiest way is to contact him and see if he can help you. Honestly, Chris is my first choice but Jake is the best local and I've been to his place. Both of them are very good at what they do.
