Anyone here ever have the rear end go in their GN? If so, what does it sound like? I was driving my car the other day and sometimes when i come to a stop there is a loud bang in the rear of the car. It sounds like the rear end might be going to me but the car has 10K miles so it doesn't make any sense to me. Why would it go so soon? Car was never driven hard and it was stock up until 9600 miles. Any thoughts,

Well, when the right side of the car gets lower, there is a scraping sound, and you see your pass. side wheel along with axle bounce of the guard rail 4 lanes away, you can be pretty sure the rear is in need of some maintenance.
Banging might be a sign of it, too. Although your U joints may be a little sloppy also.

Back wheels laying on the ground and car sitting on jackstands?
Am i close? Thats what it looks like and the sound would be a lot of cussing.:D

change the fluid an posi additive...ahhhh NO wait a min...buy another rear end...dammmm I might even have one or 2 or 3 here:D

Must be something different. I am getting plenty of traction, no noise while driving. I just get a banging noise when I come to a stop.

First of all lets get you to the right forum. Secondly there could be many things wrong with your differential, low fluid(pinion leak?), bearing problems,(noise, growling, sometimes pitchy in sound) Usually when you have a popping noise with posi its low on fluid. Does it bind? if so you could have side gear problems.

Sorry about the forum choice. No grinding noises while driving. I will check the posi fluid. It is just a loud thump/banging noise just before I come to a complete stop and it only happens 50% of the time. I am going to put the rear on some jack stands today and see if anything is loose. I was thinking it could be a shock but that would happen more when I went over bumps rather than coming to a stop, so I am puzzled.

Place car on jack stands and place in neutral. Grab the front Yoke and dirve shaft and try to twist each in opposite directions. Do this to the front of the drive shaft and the rear of the drive shaft. There should be no play. If there is you will need to pull the drive shaft (very easy) and get new U joints. If this is not the problem, grab the pinion and turn back and forth and try to move up and down, if no play then start looking at all of your upper and lower control arm bushings. All this should put you right where the problem is.

I just had a friend drop off the jack stands today, I was planning to do just that. I am really hoping it is nothing serious. Thanks.

At the risk if sounding like a smart ass, is there anything flopping around in the trunk?

I'd be looking more towards CA bushings, shocks, brakes, etc etc. Maybe something binding. Is the noise dependent on braking pressure?

There is nothing in the trunk and I don't think you are a wise ass at all, I thought of the same thing. But, the car is empty. The brakes are working fine. I still think it might be a shock and will check that today when I have it on the stands.

This is what happened to mine. Hope it helps.
I would have the exact same problem you had. It would kind of clank or bang when I came to a full stop. I thought it was from the rear. But when I had my dad try to pinpoint the sound (Hes stood right near the side of the car as Rolled five feet and hard stopped), he said it wasn't in the rear, it was from the front. Turned out to be the a-arm bushings were shot.
Have someone do the same. If it turns out to be the rear then you're going to have to test it the way they say above. But leave the hood open and have a friend look at the front end for play as you stop. It's ghetto, and if your hood shocks are not up to snuff, or your friend trips, you may lose a friend. But friends come and go. . .

Is the spare tire and jack still in the trunk, maybe not secured all the way? Not trying to be cute, just trying to help.;)

Car has 10K miles on it, no question in my mind. I put the car on jack stands last night and everyting seemed fine. I did forget to check the spare tire and jack to see if it was tight though. I will check that tonight. Shocks are good, U joints seemed fine. I guess I will have to wait til I can drive it again and see if it happens again. Thanks for all the input.

Grumpy, why is there such a negative tone in everything you post, or at least everything I have seen you post? Why would you assume my car really has 110K miles?
