Anyone reliably lock this up at the track? If so what gear(s)?

Does it have more and better clutch material than the D5?

TIA :)

Somebody's gotta be running one of these things..... ;)

Maybe the late night crew. :D

TTT

if you wanted to lock the converter at WOT, a muti-disk would have been the correct part...the single disk is not designed for that (although, neither was the stock D5...it is your $$$!)

Lockup

People at Precision said the convertor can be safely locked up in third gear

Well I know there's lotsa people locking the D5, for a while at least, at the track.

Just wondering if the single disk Vigilante was more robust than a D5.

The 7 disks have their problems in a daily driver and are harder to set up from what I have read.

Don't plan on locking it up more than 15-20 passes total in its' lifetime. :)

I have the single disc in a few 9-10 sec cars.....dont lock it up ...we have by accident an car went like 3 mph faster...didnt hurt the converter BUT its not recommended to lock it up.....single works awesome for LU on the street for normal driving....oh by the way they dont make the 7 any more....just a 5

Grumpy lock one up for a while for me. :D

Well very interesting info. thought more would be locking them up with high 11 sec. combos.

I wuz wrong I guess.

I'll start with 3rd gear and work my way down once I get it in the car. :)

They are not made to be locked up. No problem doing it, however. Just be sure you are ready to install the replacement. :) Maybe the debris won't be too much a problem.

What about the D5 anyone lock one of them up?

How many times before failure?

TIA

the more power you make, the sooner they go...you ask an impossible question. :)

I have heard of some making a half dozen passes and others making a 100. Might be some luck in there too.

Not sure if I want to hear about luck...

Then again a good honest answer is ok. :)

If it wasn't for bad luck I guess I wouldn't have any.

I wonder how many times in peoples' siggys are with locked converters? :D

Power is 350 HP about 500 Torque.

I used to hear all this talk about wiring switches and using paperclips for lockup.

Now all of a sudden the room is kinda quiet..... ;)

I don't think you will have problems for awhile with a D5 in good condition if you lock it in third after the shift. You should be able to get more than your desired number of shifts.

I am not sure you can equate a D5 with a Vigilante. I am not sure of the respective clutch areas. My gut feeling is that the D5 might be more robust but that is only a guess.

You are seeking specific answers to a somewhat subjective subject. Makes it hard to answer. Ask Bruce, or Don W, or Mike Kurtz...it will still be opinion but at least an experienced one. Only ask one of them so there is no margin for disagreement.... :D

Well...

Lets see. Race Season is from April till October twice a week and I usually went twice a week and made it 1 1/2 seasons with a D5. This was starting with an 89K miles D5 also. I dunno 200? 250? 300? runs...

I ran racegas on the street and locked it up everytime I went WOT which on the street was all the time. I think the car got abused more on the street than at the track.

At the track I locked the convertor at the line and launched with 15psi.

The D5 is awesome and I never want to upgrade, They MPH awesome, they are quiet and they just plain work the balls!

Grumpy has run a ton of D5s also for a long time.

I finally did wear out the clutch, I bought another one and put it in.

Truthfully, Id like to see an aftermarket lockup stand up to the abuse I threw at the D5s. A friend of mine killed a red Stripe in about 30 passes and went back to a D5.

Don't forget a good tranny cooler.

Arent you running a TE44 or something small? Why do you need a convertor anyways?

Dave Huinker once posted that he got over 300 runs locking his D5, in the low-12, high-11 range, before it started slipping. An archive search might turn up his post with all the details.

I'd put my 5 disk Vigilante up against a stock D5 anyday. I wouldn't want to compare them in the noise department, though. ;)

I'd also like to check the "slippage" on a D5 vs a multi disk Vigilante........nobody is gonna lock a Vigilante in 2nd gear unless the trans is 100% billet (and I think even then you are asking to break something on the next shift)

there is just no comparison between the two

all my street family cars have a stock converter....what a POC :p ....Melissa's Limited T. wifes TTA, Melissa's WE-4.an my other "beaters" have all lasted for over 100k....an thats drivin with a lock up switch close to me at all times ;) ....we are now tryin a new set up in Melissa's...5 disc...we have gone low 11s with the D5 an tons of runs on them!!!! did I say I like stock parts :)

Now this makes no sense to me so please explain your theory.

Why would a locked D5 be easier on a tranny than a locked Vigilante?

I would think that once the convertor is locked your basically assuming close to 100% efficency through the convertor? No?

I would think the reason the Vigilante would hit harder is because its so ineffecent when its NOT locked. When you do lock it up I have seen people claim as much as 1000rpm. I would think thats the reason things break, your shocking the tranny when you lock up the ineffecient convertor.

An interesting test would be to take the same car run a D5 make 5 passes unlocked, 5 passed locked. Then run the Vig the same way and see what the MPH difference is between unlocked and locked between the two. I bet the D5 runs more mph unlocked than the vig does unlocked.

This is all a guess on my part, I have never tried one. Just watched the results of others. The D5 works fine for my application after 100s and 100s or runs and 60fts in the 1.5 Range. :)
