Is there a certain way this has to be done? I slid my convertor on the first set of splines, wiggled it around a little bit until it slid on further, then it made a "thump" sound and pushed all the way in. Was this done right? Is there a certain place that the notches on the covertor have to be on the input shaft? I bolted the trans up to the motor and there is about 3/8" play between the trans and the flywheel. I didnt put the notches on the convertor in any particular place, I just slid it on. Is this correct?

Sounds like you've got it.

Measure that space a bit more carefully as it's important. It should be between 1/8" to 3/16". You may want to put some thin flat washers in between the converter and the flexplate to attain this gap.

If you have too much, you can get the converter hub up on top of the pump gears and trash the pump.
