Smell ????

Sometimes when I get on my 86 GN a little, I can smell gas from the engine area, what might this be?

This may sound a little smart but not meant to be.
You have a gas leak somewhere.

It may be the vapor recovery cansister or it could be something much worse.
You need to check all the gas lines, connections, FPR, injectors, etc closely and soon. Look for damp or wet lines.

No simple answer.

I had a very similar problem, but I could see fuel pooled up on the intake manifold It turned out to be the o-ring between the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel rail. Good luck.
