Maybe a...

just got my short block back yesterday. When the engine builder ordered rings he asked if the ring kit used standard tension oil rings. the supplier said that they come with low tension rings as stock replacements and the standard tension rings need to be requested. Maybe thats why people have smoking problems after rebuilds?
WHY would any ring mfg sell a "standard" ring set, and have low tension oil rings in it???
Where's the "flag" when you need it??

Obrut,
What ever did u find that caused smoke? Did rebuild get done/?

Not sure Chuck, thats what he told me, if you go to the second page there is a link to a post talking about the low tension rings.

Thikstik, yes the smoking problem is gone, all I had done was the heads and new pistons. BTW I didn't put seals on the exhaust valves either and it still doesn't smoke. The HV oil pump is still in there and it doesn't smoke either. So after having all new guides put in and new piston and rings it doesn't smoke. I hope this helps you out.

Obrut,

Glad to hear it. So did u get to see if a ring/s was upside down?
RE my heads: They were done in typical machine shop folly fashion. Exh side cut down /seals put on. My smoking was almost 0 until time went by. It was only upon startup. Then got almost constant at idle. Well, it was a good thing. Turns out, 2 guides were so bad, a valve would have dropped soon. I had a load tap , so hopefully that was those guides and itll dissappear too. This was with only 10,000 miles. Im really wondering if valve guides are the 2nd most extreme pressure splash lubed lube point in these/other engines, besides cams. So i think im gona use the zddp additives even tho i have a roller.
Thanks,glad your going
