Can the soft plugs at the back of the engine (cam, oil) be replaced by removing just the trans/flexplate and not the engine?

I *think* so. Lonnie Diers roller cam setup that he developed a few years ago used a "rear cam anti-walk" kit from RPM Auto I think. This thing bolted in place of the rear cam plug and was screwed into the back of the camshaft. Modern Muscle also used this device in their budget roller cam kits. My recollection is that this thing could be installed with the engine still in the car, which tells me that you can access these items once you get the tranny out.

Once the tranny is out loosen the motor mount bolts a little and you got all the room in the world to work there.
