A guy I work with just bought an 87 Fullsize Blazer with a 350/auto. He was checking the option codes and says his has a 4L60 in it. I tried to explain that is just another terminology that GM applied to the TH700r4. He says it is a totally different trans.
I continued to explain that in the mid 80's (circa 1987) GM started calling the 700's 4L60's. I told him that they are all basically the same from 82-93 which is when GM started using the electronic version called the 4L60E. Is he correct that the TH700r4 and 4L60 are totally different transmissions. Anyone have a link to a website that describes them?

You're right!

GM began renaming their entire transmission/transaxle line to give the names some meaning. Even the TH180 and the TH400 got renamed; 3L30 & 3L80 repectively. (They never did rename the 2004R because it was soon to be extinct.)Click here.

4 - 4 speed
L - longitudinal
60 - relative torque capacity
