I am looking at buying another 2004r from a guy that says it was recently rebuilt for a pretty good price. I don't know the history of the tranny or who rebuilt it. He says it was built with all the goodies for street/strip racing (bigger pump, big governer, extra clutches, etc.).
But....it was only in his car for a "very" short time (1000 miles) because when going in reverse it grinds. He says all the forward gears work perfect, only the reverse gear grinds.
My question is does this sound like a bad planetary. Upon asking, he said it was not replaced when it was rebuilt. Is that weird, I was thinking it was a part you replace when you rebuild them.
If it is the planetary, how much does one usually run and what is involved in replacing it? Does it require full tranny disassembly? What is the going rate for labor to replace it if I can't do it myself?
Or could it be something else?
