Like the title says - I need the correct clip to hold my shifter cable to the bracket on the trans. Mine popped out of the bracket yesterday and I almost ran myself over reaching under to fix it. I've been using the wrong style clip for years and I'm finally fed up with it.

Anyone know where to get one? They used to have them on the HELP! racks but I don't see them anymore.

Yes, they still have them. I'd have thought they were discontinued long ago. Naturally no one has them in stock, but I should have them within a few days.

When I get the P/N I'll post it up.

Gbodyparts or fullthrottle should have em I would think

Sorry - I should have been more specific. I meant what local-type places have them. I got stuck in numerous places over the weekend trying to drive my GN around. The 'ol turn-the-column trick didn't work every time because the cable was binding.

Aaaaaaanyway. Yes, GM still can get them. Used ones are useless because they are spring loaded and weaken over time. The P/N on the ones I just got are #0470779 and described as a "SPRING" (though when you Google it you get nothing). Dealer pricing is around $3 each. Slapped one on (and hung a spare on the cork board to collect dust) and I'm good as new now.

Put the car against a wall or something sturdy enough to hold it if it rolls next time. Be sure to put the e-brake on also when playing with shifter linkage with the engine running:eek: .

Yeah. I was stuck in someone's driveway after dropping off some papers. Embarrassed, I turned the column to back out of the driveway and into the street only to find that the range of travel was only between park and reverse. No forward gears or neutral. I had to get out, reach under the car and pull on the cable. I shut the car off but didn't set the brake. Luckily it didn't roll very fast.

If you squeezed the button on the shifter in it would have turned to reverse.

Actually the shifter was bottomed out down in first when I turned the column. I tried moving the shifter around to 'reset' it - no dice. The only travel I got was between park (to which the shifter moved so the 2nd area) and reverse (where the shifter bottomed out). It was was weird.

Maybe the linkage was binding.

Yeah it was all kinds of messed up. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. When I got home all I had to do was put the cable back in the bracket and it was fine.

Nothing holds that cable in place like the right clip, though. It's one less thing nagging me at the back of my mind.

Ive had to do a little bending on the bracket on some cars that had problems with clips falling off. Just bend it toward the cable a little and tap the clip on with a Ford wrench.
