Looking for someone who has installed a spearco intercooler on a 84-85 Buick GN. My question is why do they change the vacuum hose routing and add two restrictors (.0292") and (.025") to the waste gate pressure side? Why do they also want to put in a one way check valve? They also change the fuel pressure regulator hose directly to the turbo? The instructions show the change but don't tell you why they do it. Thanks for any help you can shed on this. Mr. Buick

Would like to know that myself. Reading the instructions doesnt make this any easier to figure out.

my advice would be to disregard the spearco instructions.

i'm running a deltagate and bleeder valve with mine, set up per instructions on gnttype.org.

I contacted the sales department at Spearco and they said that they are sending me the missing orfice restrictors and check valve. I tried to run the car hooking it up in the normal vacuum line configuration, but it surges real bad until the engine is warmed up and in closed loop. Even after it is warmed up it still has a small surge and hesitation. I put in new disc style Poston injectors, 30 psi at the same time I installed the intercooler so maybe that is causing a problem. I set the injectors at 45 psi with the vacuum line off and it dropped to 40 psi with the vacuum line on. I noticed in the Poston catalog that the injectors are marked PSI and all the higher volume injectors are marked PPH? What else do I need to adjust for the intercooler? thanks Mr. Buick

are you going to let the computer control your boost?

i personally wouldn't,i'd run a grainger valve.but that's just me:).

Hesitation and surging is why I relocated my TB back when I had that intercooler. You can tune and make it a little better but no matter what I tried it wouldn't go away. After the relocation I had better than stock throttle response and no sign of hesitation. If you can't get rid of it with tuining I would suggest this mod.

OK, back to basics, what do you mean you relocated your throttle body back? Where did you mount it? If you don't use the ECU to control the boost, do you disconnect the waste gate controller? What does the ECU act like if it doesn't get the proper signals from the wastegate control? Please fill in the complete details on exactly what you two did. Thanks Mr. Buick

When you go with a bleeder and take ECU control away, keep the electrical plugged in. The computer doesn't know the difference since there's no feed back.

With the throttlebody, I put it almost behind the turbo, connected to the elbow in the back of the intake. There are pictures on the board if you want them. With the Spearco kit, I cut about an 8" section out of the piping and put the throttle body in it's place.

Spearcon Intercooler

Yes I would like to see the pictures, where do I look, Thanks Mr. Buick

Spearco Intercooler update

OK I have adjusted the TPS with the Caspers TPS throttle enhancer and that cured the driveabilty issues. I had installed new carpet in the car and it was keeping the TPS from reaching wide open throttle. I could set it to .45 at idle and adjust it to 4.50 at WOT but when I played back the Turbo link it would only show 4.39 so the fuel injectors were not at 100%. I also modified the Wastegate rod and set it to 6-3/8". The Spearco kit really woke this old Buick up and put some punch back into the car. Another question I have is why do the orfice tubes differ so much between the Buicks and the Pont TA? We have .026 and .050 and the Pont has .040? thanks Mr. Buick
