I am trying to install the black speedo gear and I can not get the old one out. My trans was rebuilt by one of out better vendors. It looks like there is a retaining plate missing but how is this dam thing held together. This is the way It has been since it was rebuilt I did not take anything off other than the cable. Very confussed????

To correct my speedo, I bought a Monty Carlo SS speedo reducer. Goes right by the firewall, and splices right into the cable junction for the head unit, under the hood.

Add or subtract about 15% of speed. You can take apart the little aluminum box and flip the gears if you need to subtract speed. It's about 1/2 the size of a pack of smokes. I bought one from GM about one year ago. Has male on one side and female on the other (Garden hose looking screw on connectors). Also know how to make a new speedo cable out of cheap cables from the store if needed.

Chit, you could put two together and add/subtract 30%. Always sell when done. Takes about two minutes to install.

Looks like your speedo is pressed into tranny housing pretty tight if you did not have the clip holding it on.. Corrosion? Bent ring? (I'm no tranny expert by any means.)

Sal,
It looks as if the builder may have never removed it during the build. And it looks rusted in.
Try to apply some penatrating oil on it, let it sit for a few.
Then with a large bladed screwdiver pry where the retainer should have been. That has worked well for me in the past. Also, using a hammer tap the housing around the sides to try and knock some of the corrosion loose.

This thing will not budge. If I remove the pan will I have access to the back so I can hit it out?

OK. It is out. What a pain in the rear. There was not glue at all. Rust was holding it in.
