Ok guys how do I get this crap off my computer? Some program downloaded itself and changed my default homepage and now it is constant popups. I didn't renew norton antivirus would that have helped me any? It keeps downloading other programs and I have to keep deleting them. If its possible to get a free program somewhere that would be the best because I'm not paying for this crap. The morons that create this stuff should be drug out in the street and dismembered with a baseball bat.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I use a free one called SpyBot. There was a weather webpage I visited that put more popups on my computer, and I switched to another site which helped.

Also, before you install the ad or spy software, if you have XP, you can roll your system back to a point before the infection.
Only newly installed programs will be affected, (no email etc will be deleted).

I actually had the same issue

I downloaded a zip file for a song that required a password.

MY virus protection instantly went off and found 2 Trojan viruses, which I use Norton AntiVirus.

The main issue is "bridge.dll" is really the culprit for my problem. Find it and remove the "bridge.dll" and "bridge.inf"

What happened is that when you search on something, another window opens up advertising what you searched on.

AKA --- Adrotator popup

need to remove "urllauncher.urllaunchercontrol"
and "urllauncher.urllaunchercontrol.1"

The culprit is "Second Thought" -- "Virtual Bouncer" and LOP.com, all of which are like a adrotator.

This problem caused me major stress. If I could have reached through my broadband cable and choked somebody, it would have to be done.

The software company says "if you want to remove do this... do this" DO NOT listen to them, just a scam

I downloaded some free spyware/adware and found the pests but couldn't remove all of it. I ended up buying some software for $30 to help plu my virus protection. Get them both if you just like to surf and are not a computer geek willing to spend time and money fixing your computer.

LOXOSCAM virus

THE MAIN POINT IS ---- "rundll.exe" is a virus

also, I found that "bridge.dll" and "bridge.inf" MUST be found and removed or everything else will be for nothing.

Simply type in google "$Chicago$"

Do a search on the following:
msbb.exe
slmss
Sqwire.exe
sqinstaller.exe
mwsvm.exe

and remove, be careful who you get your information from and if is reliable and trustworthy.

Got my trojan virus March 28, 2004 and didn't have roll back option working ( I have windows XP)

use both
spybot and lavasoft adware remover, they are free on download.com

I downloaded spybot last night and it found a ton of crap but still didn't fix the problem. I'm going to try hijack this and maybe roll back my system if that don't work.

Thank you all for the help I didn't know which programs to trust and which would make it worse.

Hijack This! has always worked for me.
Easy, quick and effective.
I'll bet it does the trick.

Not 100% certain yet but I think hijack this! fixed it. it's a really small program and downloaded quick on dial-up. Thanks again for the help!

Without going into my computer background I'll suggest two things;

#1 Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy

#2 Run MSCONFIG from the RUN menu. If you're running XP or 2000 you can download this tiny utility and run it. It'll let you see what programs start up with OR most importantly WITHOUT your knowledge. You can disable what you wish, such as spy programs which run and boot-up upon system restart. You'd be surprised what MSCONFIG will find even after running Spybot and Ad-Aware.

PS Ad-Aware is mediocre in my book.

If this sounds a little repetitive or grammatically incorrect it's Saturday night and I've imbibed a bit :D. Please forgive...

what should be in the start up? some of the stuff I know I want there, but other stuff I don't know anything about.. This is with XP btw.

You can examine it several different ways. Simply by the title of the file, what directory it sits in (needs some knowledge of MS operating systems), or you can simply search the net for the file explanations. Just open Google and search for the specific file name and see what it does. If it's malicious in any respect, you bet it'll be posted many times. Windows won't let you de-select something it NEEDS, well it will but it'll re-enable it automatically. If your computer acts funny after shutting something off, then simply re-open MSCONFIG and enable it again. You won't do any damage by de-selecting some startup programs (ONLY) in MSCONFIG.

Go get this program windows start up inspector. If you are online when you run it ,it will show you everything in your starup and if you hit consult tab it will tell ya what each item is if it is needed or a virus or users choice. It is freeware too!!!!

Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware 6.0:

Be sure to download all the updates prior to running your system scans. That can mean getting to the stuff you need to remove and missing it. You will find updates often although not quite as much as virus protection. Just thought I'd chime in since I didn't see anyone mentioning updates.

www.spywareinfo.com I'ts a really small program and downloads quick. I used spybot S&D too and that found a hundred and some odd things but that was before I used hijack this!. I think i'll use them both regularly and update them often.
