I've got some Spyware/tracking cookies on my computer. I downloaded the free programs- Adware, PC Tools and Malware. The laptop has been running slow recently.

Adware found it but says can't remove it.

PC Tools found it but can't remove it unless I pay for the subscription.

Didn't do the Malware.

I have the free version of AVG for anti-virus, etc, etc. I finds but does not do anything.

So.....do I have to pay for a subscription? If so, which one should I get.

Thanks

I and many people I know have used Norton for years with 0 issues, and it catches everything for me anyway.

I am sure computer guru's will chime in like KLRV6 or somebody but I have had great luck with this. Download it right off the net.

Norton will never be installed on any of my computers again. Norton is a memory hog and slows everything up. I had Norton on my laptop and had to get rid of it, it kept bouncing me off the internet. The tech support blamed every other program I had but theirs. Got rid of Norton, everything is fine.

Sorry to hear that, I have never had any issues. I guess that why options are like *******s LOL, everybody has one:biggrin:

Good Luck, let us know what you go with.

Save your personal files and pics to cd asap!

Get ready for complete system reinstall, had the same problem on desktop. Malware did not help, norton did not help, tried to remove individual files and killed the whole thing. It is at the shop now getting XP reinstalled. Saving the pics was the best thing I did.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware... we basically charge people $160 at work to run this program.

I had a very similar problem Billy. I was turned on to this program after trying all that you've mentioned and then some. It worked awesome. After I ran the SuperSpyware program I ran a Registry Defrag/cleaner program and my cpu ran better than it did when new!

Here is the spyware site. Download the FREE program it is all you will need.
SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!

Here is the registry defrag I used afterwards. It was necessary to do this step as well.
Auslogics - Download Auslogics Registry Defrag

Let us know how it works out for you.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware... we basically charge people $160 at work to run this program.

That's what I was going to recommend. My PC had a bug about two weeks ago out of nowhere, I didn't download anything, I forget the name of which trojan virus it was, but Anti-Malware took care of it.

Depends on what you got IMO! Most virous and trojans can be caught. Some of them are just nasty and require a reload...

I had some problems a few weeks back. Got a email from the bank saying it was from their system:eek: so they gave me a free copy of the big Mcfee deal. IT SUCKED!

I already had Norton CORPORATE! Supposed to be the da stink:rolleyes: It didn't catch it...

AVS didn't catch it. I tried alot of the other free stuff and nothing worked.

I used this per Jays suggestion, Antivirus Software: Kaspersky Lab - Protection Against Malware and Cybercrime
That is some Russian stuff there:biggrin: It seems to have worked, I have one problem remaining, I think a trojan virus wiped out part of my registry so I am going to try to FIX XP through the disk!

Like Adam said though, get a big external HD and save all your important stuff!

Good luck buddy!

WHat was the name of it?? I had to fight with backdoor.tidserv!inf over the weekend. There is lots of info on how to remove it on the web. I finally got it out then put in my XP disk like I was going to reinstall and chose the repair option instead. Everything worked out fine and just ha to re-update SP2 and SP3.

If it's only tracking cookies there is nothing to worry about.

Spyware programs list pretty much every cookie as something harmful when they're not.

Cookies are also subject to a number of misconceptions, mostly based on the erroneous notion that they are computer programs. In fact, cookies are simple pieces of data unable to perform any operation by themselves. In particular, they are neither spyware nor viruses, although cookies from certain sites are described as spyware by many anti-spyware products because they allow users to be tracked when they visit various sites.

Most modern browsers allow users to decide whether to accept cookies, but rejection makes some websites unusable. For example, shopping carts implemented using cookies do not work if cookies are rejected.

I just had a (Mirar) toolbar show up on my computer and it was LOADED with pop-ups and was a real pain to try and remove.

I went with this free software: http://www.superantispyware.com/ and my computer runs like it was new!!

It showed I had over 200 harmfull items and they are all gone and i'm very happy with this spyware..

PS: Run the "complete" system check. Then quaranteen those items found, Then I went back and "Removed" those items from the quarenteen because with the wrong press of the key those items can be put right back!!

dont bother with all that nonsense crap

go here

Trend Micro HijackThis 1.99.1 - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

downlaod hijackthis.exe

this programs looks all windows processes that is not in the task manager.

You will have to use the program do scan only, check the process that corrosponds with the spyware/virus, or check anything that isnt a program that you recognize(experts only) just have to becarefull of what you check. once you check the appropriate process to kill, click "fix checked"

immediatly go to adaware or spybot or whatever program you have and you will be able to remove the program.

What is happening is those programs cant remove/delete the spyware because it is in use and is not listed in the task manager processes menu.

Hijackthis.exe with enable you to remove it. Use this program in corrospondance with spybot, adaware, ccleaner etc. all good programs. I run these once a week. Spybot is a also a spyware program not a virus but does the same thing when installed. If you use this program, download it install it, update it do what you got to do and remove the program. It will make your internet lag as i have noticed this while playing games.

your a sucker if you pay for any program

also see www.softexia.com, they might have a antivirus program full version you can download

I had terrible luck with the malwarebytes, however I did hear good things about Kaperensky and Hijackthis. Never got to use them because on a restart it locked up on a black screen that kept saying trying to load last known configuration.

Like I said earlier, learned my lesson and from now on everything important goes to cd and stored away in case of emergency.

Yup... download both HiJack This! and Superantispyware and run HJT first, then SAS... should get it.... went thru this a few months ago... took a couple weeks of research for me to figure a fix... found this site.. Tech Support Forum which has a big malware help section, and a very thorough 'procedure' to follow which hinges around using the HiJackThis! first and then a couple freeware (SAS, AVG included) antivirus products. Followed the procedure EXACTLY, and it fixed it right up.... good luck!

I was lucky enough to save my personal laptop, fiance's is not so lucky! The virus it got cut off internet connectivity, which stopped AVG from being able to update etc. I am going to try and boot it up and get her pics off of it this weekend then reformat. What a pain!

HiJackThis is a good program, I've used it many times too. Once you get your log file from the scan, paste it in the box at HijackThis Logfileauswertung and it will analyze it for you and let you know which processes are potentially harmful.
