This is probaly a really newb question but I've tried searching with little luck. I'm just trying to figure out what makes a stage motor and find some spec info on the stage motors. Also, I only hear about the Stage II's, is there a such thing as a Stage I motor? If so whats is difference about it and a stock 3.8 motor?

Thanks
Ray

Go to the Stage II forum under general tech. All that info is in there. Yes there is a stage I and the biggest differences in the blocks is C/I's and the meat in between the walls!

Yes sir, I've tried looking through the Stage II section and it's a bit confussing. That stuff is typical infomation to those guys. So terms like On center and Off center parts are not defined. I have no idea what that is and what the pros and cons are behind it. It would be nice if there was a general description of a Stage I & Stage II motor posted so newbs like my self could understand.

Thanks
Ray

I have little knowlege on these, but this is what I gathered. Stage 1 is stronger than a production block and has 8 bolt heads. Stage 2 has 14 bolt heads and is even stronger than a stage 1. The Stage 2 can be off center (which the stock blocks and stage 1's are), or on center. On center blocks have modified cylinder banks so the connecting rod is centered in the piston on the pin, where the off centers are just that, off center. On centers require a different intake manifold because one head is moved back. You can use production style heads on any of them.

Also lots of good info at Turbo Regal Web Site. Basically Buick Motorsports cast the Stage I block as a stronger block than the stock blocks, in both 3.8 and 4.1 L bores, with stock oiling and 8 head bolts per side (but with the bosses so 6 more could be added per side), and cast two bolt main caps. Then they came out with the Stage II block, same casting but machined for 4 or 6 bolt main caps depending on when cast, the 6 extra head bolt holes drilled and tapped, and set up for external oiling (the oil gallery that goes from the oil pump pickup to the front cover gets in the way of long stroke cranks), also in both 3.8 and 4.1 L bores. The Stage blocks were never used in a production vehicle but were available through Buick dealers and mostly intended for Nascar and Indy.

For on/off center go to http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/st...f-center-please-explain.html?highlight=ijames

WOW...That pretty much answers my questions.

Thanks guys
Ray

Ps, anyone got a picture of a 6 bolt main cap? I've seen 4 bolts but never even heard of a 6 bolt until now.

How cool...I never seen bolts going through the side of the block on a main cap. Thats wicked  So far thats the only block I've seen for sale on that site. Do you know if or anyone else still sells the stage I's?
