Are all of the steering boxes the same in the Buicks or are the turbo cars different?

Nope. There are quite a few variations of steering boxes.
The 2 basic designs for the 78-88 A/G body are
Saginaw 605 (identified with by round top cover retained by snap ring
Saginaw 800 (identified with by aluminum top cover retained by 4 bolts)
The 605's were used on many bread and butter model cars. These boxes are junk and GM doesnt carry replacement parts for it.
The 800 was used on many bread and butter models as well and there has never been anything printed to say why some got the 605 and some got the 800.
But as far as the performance models (84-87 Turbo Regals, 83-88 Monte SS, 83-84 Hurst Olds/85-87 442) go, the 800 was used with a faster ratio along with stiffer pressure relief springs in the pump.
The 82-92 performance F bodies used a similar box with different stops depending on wheel size. Many guys make a big deal over the box from Irocs and GTAs as it could be slightly different.
If you use an 800 from an F body you must use a G body 800 pitman arm.

Thanks, I guess my next question would be can they be repaired or replaced? I took my 87T to a local garage (friend of mine) to be aligned and they told me there was play in the steering box.

Depending on how much play....

....they can be adjusted. I replaced the box on my '82 S10 with an '85 Monte SS box, and man what a difference.

AGR carries replacement steering boxes OEM and hi-perf. A little pricey, around $350 or so. I think they have a ratio of 12:1. AGRPerformance.com. Sumitt catalog also carries the AGR products. This will probably be the route i go seeing i will keep car till the wheels fall off!

Hi!
Ideally, the adjustment mentioned earlier is for sector shaft bearing preload only. However, in a pinch a judicious clockwise turn or two will snug things up, but be careful! You would not like to drive a car which has had this adjustment over tightened.
Also, you might pull the plastic shield off theintermediate shaft and check the condition of the isolation disc. They are made of rubber/fiber and go bad after years of use. Good luck!

Thanks, maybe If they can align it with the slop in it, I'll leave it alone for now. It's not that bad driving.
