Today my steering wheel disconnected from the rest of the column. It is still connected to the plastic housing where the ignition/tilt and the turn signal handle is, but they all flop around and can rotate independently of each other (steering wheel/ignition housing/steering column) when i would turn the wheel the shifter would move slightly between park reverse and neutral.

From looking at past posts this is nothing i want to get into myself. how much am i looking at for a shop to replace it? i'll most likely take it up to Jack Cotton.

thanks in advance

get a steering colum out of a monte carlo ss, or a gn column , its easy to install, never heard of that problem, i usually see the tilt spring gets loose, its a pain to fix but cheaper then to buy a new one

hope this helps

The tilt mech bolts came loose. Oddly enough, the column had to be pretty loose for awhile for this to happen.

It's not that hard of a job but there is a special tool ($10.00 at most A.P. stores) you'll need. It's the steering column snap ring tool.
Basically, start taking it apart from the top down...there are instructions on www.Gnttype.org.

i looked around for a steering column break down on gnttype.org, couldn't find anything, is there a graphic? or a walkthrough? or both?

Bob Hebert has a whole column for $100 on gnttype. Bolt in yourself, no fuss, no muss. Swap the ignition switch and done.

steering column repair tip

The guy in the link used an 8-32 machine screw and Vice-Grips to
pull the pivot pins. Too risky for me! I use an 8-32 X 1-1/2 screw
in a small dent puller for body work (about $10 or so at Autozone,
etc.). Works great! :)

You sure it just came loose? I had a GM tilt colum do this a few years back.......only thing is that I had just tightened everything up less than a year ago.

Turned out one of the sheetmetal tubes in the colum broke.............in a section where it was perforated (does that paint a picture.........had slots in it).

Might want to check for this.
