For some reason recently the upper portion of my steering column has gotten very loose and flops around(up and down, and side to side). Anyone ever have this happen with their car?
Fixes?
At this point, I can't get the key out of the ignition switch, so I'm going to have to do something...
Thanks,
Jon

there are some bolts inside that have come loose. Go to g/nt-type.org and do a search. There's a section on rebuilding the column that'll help. GET the lock ring removal tool (10.00) It's a must have to do this.

To get the key out, just use you hand to move/rortate the back piece nearest the dash, of the steerning column. This is the piece that the shifting linkage normally moves when you shift into park.
With the wheel/column dropping down it isn't allowing the back piece to move correctly.
Rotate the piece clockwise.

get this taken care of quickly. I put it off for a while and it got to the point where the column would turn when i would turn the wheel:eek: Then one day i was making a right and turn and it went too far and the car just shut off and everything was pretty much stuck.

Thanks for the help guys, going to be fixing it tonight hopefully...
Thanks again!
Jon

I had to buy a pivot pin removal tool when I did this job because,
there is 2 pins that hold the lower bowl to the pivot ball joint. Got it from a tool truck, $22.00 or so. Lifesaver.
