One emphysema starts, the lung degenerates, and blebs start to form. Depending on how advanced they are if you quit you might avoid a collapsed lung. BTW, there is no way to end the formation of blebs, from what I've heard and read. Once they start, they're *there*.
***
Removal of the air from the pleural cavity by inserting a hollow plastic tube, called a chest tube, between the ribs, and attaching it to a suction device

To read it, it doesn't sound like much, the reality is much different. You might get a local, and if in the ER in a true emergency, maybe not. Stuffing ~9" of tubing into your chest, is something that I'd suggest you avoid.
While you will get some lung function back if/when you quit smoking, blebs, never sleep.
