One emphysema starts, the lung degenerates, and blebs start to form. Depending on how advanced they are if you quit you might avoid a collapsed lung. BTW, there is no way to end the formation of blebs, from what I've heard and read. Once they start, they're *there*.

Removal of the air from the pleural cavity by inserting a hollow plastic tube, called a chest tube, between the ribs, and attaching it to a suction device

To read it, it doesn't sound like much, the reality is much different. You might get a local, and if in the ER in a true emergency, maybe not. Stuffing ~9" of tubing into your chest, is something that I'd suggest you avoid.

While you will get some lung function back if/when you quit smoking, blebs, never sleep.

Actually I quit smoking over 18 years ago. But from the stock movement of the Altria corporation (formerly Phillip Morris), lot of people still smoke. I bougth Altria at 35 (a little over 1.5 years ago) and the stock has recently moved to a high of 68, not to mention a 4.5% annual dividend (sometimes as high as 6.3%). Though it's sad, there is nothing like investing in vices.
