I purchased a new TA-49 from PTE. Wanting to know if I should do any mods to my stock elbow and if so, what?
Still have the factory down pipe and a adjustable waste gate actuator.

did the turbo come with an elbow? How big is the wastegate hole? If using the stock elbow you will want to port it for better flow. I have an extra if you are interested. Let me know.

the stock elbow is fine...people seem to over rate how it flows horrible...see sig below...i ran and still run the stock untouched elbow with a 3" poston's pipe with free flowing exhaust...i don't think it restricts as much as people think...i'm sure you need to ditch it once you are running seriously fast like low 11's high 10's

I also run a ported stock elbow. Port the wastegate hole a bit, but make sure you have at least 1/8" sealing around the whole puck when it closes.

I have to disagree with ya on this one, at least in my case. I had the stock elbow ( unported ) and a budget 3" dp together and my best time was a 12.28. Installed a Mease 3" dp, and no other changes, ran 11.83, 11.89, 11.87 and 11.79. That's a pretty good gain, and it may not be typical results but it did for me. It's the best money I've spent. But, again let me say before everybody starts saying how fast they went with a unported stock elbow, that this worked for and may not be the case for everybody.

UNGN did a back to back test at the track, ported elbow vs. THDP, and I believe he noted a difference of .15 and 2mph.

I have a ported elbow and el cheapo 3" DP. I am not putting any more money in this car this year, and its a blast:cool:

ported elbow

I have ported quite a few of these. i didn't really get any track results but i ran a ported elbow with the stock downpipe, couldn't really tell much of a difference but when i mated that ported elbow with a 3" downpipe, that is when i could really tell a big difference in spool up.....Spool up was instant... I believe it is worth porting because of the lips at the outlet.grind them down:) Bob

Thanks everyone for your input. I'am waiting on the machine shop for my engine, so I have some time to spare, so I might do a little porting on it. How much metal can be taken off the inner walls safely or should I just smooth it out inside?

pics

You can take out a good bit i will send you a couple of pics of a ported elbow..give you an idea................................Bob

no email

I guess i won't, you aren't accepting emails:eek: ................Bob

I took a lot of meat out of mine........it probably weighs half of what it did before!
Don't worry if you go too far with the porting, it can be brazed.........don't ask how I know:D

The difference was actually only .055 seconds and 1.5 mph with the 1/8th mile et and mph being very similar. 5 runs with each throwing out the worst two.

Ported elbow/2.5" ATR downpipe/testpipe:

11.840 @ 113.08
11.859 @ 114.66
11.836 @ 114.72

Average:

11.845 @ 114.15 (avg 60 ft 1.680)

Terry houston 3" DP/Capped dump pipe:

11.745 @ 115.36
11.788 @ 116.05
11.838 @ 115.62

Average:

11.790 @ 115.67 (avg 60 ft 1.687)

Difference = .055 seconds and 1.52 mph.

This was with a TA49 and using 28 inch tires/lockup converter.

With a larger exhaust wheel turbo or a combo set up for Higher RPMs (26 In tall tires/non lockup converter) a TH style downpipe would help more.

On a more stock combo, I'd imagine it wouldn't help as much.

Thanks UNGN for the correction. I remember it wasnt enough to justify the expense of a THDP to me, since I will probably never go faster than the times you just listed
