if i remember correctly i think the 84/5 turbos are not as efficient/powerful as the 86/7 turbos.....now i have access to a 87 turbo......will it bolt up....will it make a difference???? thanks

yes it will make a measurable difference but no it won't directly bolt up.

you'll have to re-clock the housings to point where they need to.then you'll have to use a piece of heavy duty intercooler hose to attatch the outlet of the turbo to the intake adapter.

your throttle body will also be tilted a bit,but it will still be fine as far as i've heard.

you need to cut the compressor outlet and the intake adapter other wise you'll have problems fitting.. I cut the intake adapter down enough so there was some material to clamp the hose on, and then i cut a bit from the compressor outlet, and connected them with the HD intercooler hose (which still hasent melted by suggestion of board member.. perhaps he used kirban's hose? ;))

John Craig

I bought a spare adaptor and got a 86/87 turbo. I sent my 86/87 housing and adaptor to John Craig and he cut and welded them in the correct spot. Something Lee mentioned he had done. Lee also had some adaptors made up that reposition the throttle body so it sets correctly. It looks impressive on the bench ( not on the car yet ). Just a thought to add to the conversation.

Well now that is certainly a more permanent choice...

even though you cut the compressor housing, you can still putit back on an '87.. if you put the adapter on it, youd have to cut it back off! ;p

87 turbo

When I did mine, I made a piece just like the adaptor. I made it fit over the 87 turbo then had it welded. also made a plate for the throttle body and everything look just like stock. when I converted to the 86-87 set up I was still able to used the turbo. I have some pictures if interested.

so when swapping a stock 87 turbo to a hotair, do you have to change the exhaust side, or will it bolt up to the stock downpipe on the hotair, I can get a stock 87 turbo too, just need some pointers to get it on my car. Where can I get the right IC hose for the intake side?

The exhaust will bolt up. You will also have to switch the mounting ears.

if anyone has pics of this install...such as the adapter or any custom parts made...and a pic of the completed setup...thanks, STeve
