I have been chasing a rattling noise since I bought the car and found it was coming from the converter cover. I removed the cover and found one of the converter-flexplate bolts loose. I removed them and re-installed using Thread locker blue(scared of the red). Anyway, I noticed that the converter has 5s going all the way around.

I asked the previous owner if he installed a non-lockup converter because the lock-up isn't working. He said they installed a B&M converter. I asked him LU or non LU and his reply was whatever they had. I suspected he was FOS at the time, but now I need confirmation as to whether or not this is the stock D5. I have a new filter, gasket & TCC solenoid in case it is and I need to install a new solenoid. Thanks

Marc

no one knows what the stock D5 looks like with all of the upgraded converters people have added? Damn!

yes the stock converter has D5 printed on it all the way around next to every rib or groove on the converter

mine too is a non LU now that the TCC solenoid has gone bad!

good luck with the converter issues!

I appreciate the information. That means the previious owner lied about something else. I hope this is the last surprise that I find. I installed the new TCC solenoid already and I'm just waiting for my new CS-144 alternator to come back. I also installed the Casper High Output positive cable today so there should be plenty of juice for the electronic components.

Thanks again.

It's very easy, but messy without a drain plug. I bought it from
https://www.kirbanperformance.com/ for $45
along with other parts. Some people find them cheaper at other places though. If you can swing the $$$, i would get the trans pan kit so you can use the 700 R4 filter because it picks up from the bottom.

This is a major cause of failure in these transmissions.

Anyway, make sure you have a new filter, gasket & about 5 quarts of ATF(I used Mobil 1 ATF) before you start.

1. Drain the fluid (This won't be pleasant)
2. Remove pan and then remove filter(Make sure the orange/yellow seal comes with it). This is why I hate flushes without the filter change. The previous owner only performed flushes and the seal was stuck inside and I wasted 20 minutes scraping it out and still couldn't get it all.
3. The TCC solenoid is held in by 2 10 mm on the passenger side front of the valvebody.(You will see the red and black wires coming out of it. (Make sure the O-ring comes out with it)
4. Remove the Horizontal black connector on the driverside for the TCC connector.
5. Disconnect the inside TCC connector by pulling down(gently) on the clip.
6. remove the White wire and black(original, new one might be blue) from the pressure switches and remove the part.

It's not difficult, but messy. I would suggest buying kitty litter before you start. Also my deep pan is on the way with drain plug for future ATF changes.

Note: Add an additional quart to the fluid level or the pump will suck air on hard acceleration. Can't believe they put the filter opening on the top in a car with a ton of torque. The deep pan with 700 R4 filter is the best way to go if you want the trans to live for a while, but addiding the extra quart will help.
