I do detailing on the side and am getting ready to detail my dads 87 stock GN. What type of paint is it. Is it a two stage color clear, laquer or enamel? My dad says that its a single stage laquer from the factor but I dont know if I buy that.

Any help would be great as it will help me determine my approach to paint correction and sealant.

If your dads GN still wears factory paint, then its definitely single stage lacquer. Careful if planning on using a rotary. These factory paint jobs were applied paper thin and you could easily burn through if not careful. Orbital would be safer if the car doesn't need a whole lot of paint correction.

thats a + 3 for the single stage lacquer
also be pretty careful of what wax, glaze or polish you plan to use as it will fog up in the clear... the original finishes were very touchy just like the rest of the car hahahah

The were laquer paint, single stage. I just detailed my brother in-laws early 90's VW Corrado and it too was single stage red. I didnt even bother getting out the rotary. Used my PC 7424 and some Meguiars 205 on a white pad, took the dead paint right off without going through. Finished up with some Meguiars #7 show car glaze on a black pad (that #7 is ridiculous on single stage paint, looks half a mile deep), and then some #26 Yellow Wax. He was about to get it painted...not anymore. Car went from faded pink to Ferrari red in an afternoon.

Thanks for the suggestion 87. That is the exact set up I am planning on using; 205 with a PC7424XP and white pad. Then finish off with #26 and a LC red pad, should look $$$
