If so.... how does a prominent torque converter manufacturer.... totally screw up a perfectly good converter? if the insides are just like everyone elses?

>>> Depends on who's building it. I've messed up a few. No one is impervious..

Also... if it is just like anyone elses.... why aren't other manufacturers making lock-ups that will hold up at WOT with big HP if the internal parts are std run-of-the mill stuff. The number of converter manufacturers that say "lock it" at WOT on 500+ RWHP is very few.... most won't touch and claims of WOT lockup... >> No matter who makes it, a single disc won't handle too many wot runs for too long >>> The pumps, turbines and stators are STOCK 245 MM stuff.

IMHO.... the 9/11 is probably worthy of WOT lockups...but the OP was asking for opinions on the "strongest".... and IMHO.... the 5-disk vigilante is unmatched for it's lockup abilities.

>>>> no doubt that the 5- disc is WOT lock up champ, But Percision won't sell a multi-disc set up to us converter builders unless it's for a diesel multi disc converter. They will sell us the parts to fix a multi-disc but won't sell the cover to build our own multi disc.

Cummon... give credit where it is due..... it is the front runner for maximum effort lockups that even the company that builds them will tell you is OK to lock at WOT......

They do have their ideosyncrocies.... the infamous rattle.... as well as slipping 30% when not locked..... but lock that puppy.... and she will be there.

30% unlocked???

I never measured more than 8% loss through the traps unlocked on my "old" 7 disc monster.

Ideosyncrocies? Yes! Probably the reason they don't build them anymore (7 disc that is), but I've NEVER been able to cure the "cold engine" stall when shifting into gear issue. I just have learned I have to feather the throttle when shifting into gear when cold.

But I still think it's the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to sheer brute strength for constant year in, year out WOT lockups.

I realize that Grumpy has ran 138mph on the 9/11...... but be honest..... how many locked passes has the converter survived? I know it has held up so far.... but IMHO....put 75 lockup passes on it in the upper 130's and show me the data and time slips to show converter slippage. IMHO... it will eventually smoke the clutch.....

Melissa prob has an easy 30+ runs locked up from late sept to early nov last year ... not a race car BUT a DRIVER with a little power :p oh she has also been running over 130s for a while  EVERYTHING has a life span ... anything and everything can break with the blink of your eye.. :p

Upon looking up my previous thread....I guess I embellished it a little bit.... it feels like it slips a ton when unlocked...

Here is a post I did on a recent thread... you were in that thread as well... 16.7% with a 5-disk unlocked.....

That is what i've been seeing as well. I'm thinking it's the "turbo stator" that is the culprit. I ended up re-doing a VIG 3 disc lock up for a 4r70-w in a 98 cobra that is making 701hp at the wheels {BW s-400 turbo} and that was a 6 pump and "turbo stator " {exact same as a 6 pump single or multi disc lock up for a buick} at it's at 16% slip unlocked {verified on a Mustang dyno}. I'm going to change it to the next stator down and will post results soon.

Mike.
