Hey guys/gals, just thinking ahead here. Not sure if I will do this soon [although I would like to] or if it will be over the winter, but I would like some suggestions on what turbo to move up to after the ta33. Already with the porting Ive done to the heads and the open plenum/ported intake (and especially whenever I swap back in my .030 block with 204/214 cam back in after rebuilding it) I am almost certain my combo is just begging for a turbo that can move a bit more air.
I think the last time I spoke to John Craig he mentioned a 60, but Im not sure, its been awhile. I have heard a 63 or 66 was possible, maybe with a 87 housing, not sure. What do you guys recommend? Also, I know he was saying if they upgrade my 33 it would be a bit cheaper than if I send one of the stockers Ive got sitting around, but maybe it would be worth keeping the 33 especially with how expensive it was, right? Whatcha think? I do have at least one 87 stocker sitting around also that I could send if needed. Definately trying to still stay streetable here, so dont want to go to far over board.

Thanks in advance, just looking for a little direction here. Ready to really start turning some heads with this old hotair car :)

TA 66

Send him your stock 87 along with a cone adapter (I have an extra). He will weld the adapter to the 87 compressor housing so you only use 1 o-ring. Ask for a 66mm compressor wheel --a Q trim exhaust wheel with a Precision 85 exhaust housing.

Thanks Lee, sounds like a plan :) . Any idea on cost? Also what injectors do you recomend with it. I was thinking 50# were going to be my next upgrade but also keeping my ears open to what people think of the new 60# injectors Mike Licht has been offering. Also, Id probably be pushing it with the 2800 stall convertor with a turbo that big, right?

...and the only time a cam is too big is when it won't go into the block...:D

I'd say you're gonna need at least a 3400 stall for that puppy...

i have a brand new garrett t66 p-trim that i want to get rid of.. and i'm looking for a ta33c which you have (i think, if i'm reading this right) you'll have to change some stuff around because it has 4 bolt exhaust flangesbut it may be worth looking at. if you have any oher parts to trade we might be able to work out a deal. here is a link for the specs of my turbo..

here are the specs the link wouldn't work...

true garrett from honeywell
P trim (ANTI -SURGE)
compressor housing ar.70 m240
exhaust housing ar.69
four bolt flanges on exhaust external waste gate.
four inch inlet for the compressor

it is brand new.. it has a superstrong billitt backing plate that will not flex.
original cost just under $1400
will part with for $1000 shipped obo or trade of equal value..

looking for a smaller turbo for my hot air project ta33 or ta 49 something like that...

I love it when you say that,im under the same impression:)

Ive got a 3 to 4 bolt Turbonetic's adaptor if anyone needs it.

Its worth thinking about.........but what all would be involved in me getting that one to work. Looks like it will be alot. Both exhaust side and compressor side need adapting, not to mention will the intake to turbo "cone" adaptor hook up?

I would love some advice on this idea from the other guys too. Sounds like a great idea if we could help each other out, but I dont really want to go through more than I need to force it to work with adaptors and such that would throw off everything else in the engine compartment (piping, exhaust, tb, etc.). Id rather do it the right way the first time with no issues and be done with it. Maybe just sell the ta33 outright if I dont decide to keep it too.

the cone adaptor will fit it should be welded in place though.. ...you can buy a whole exhaust side with three bolt flange if you want. someone makes an adapto for the throttle body i'm not sure who it is maybe someone here knows.... either way you'll have to run an external waste gate. i was going to run a 3500 stall this turbo will suupport 40 lbs of boost 700 hp though! i wish i could use this thing but i cant afford to right now i have to get a wiring harness and another turbo.. i wanna get my car on the road by the end of fall :D maybe get a run or two in before she goes in for paint.. ;)

What did you end up doing (combo) and what are your results?

No changes. Havent been to track yet this year so times in sig are still current best. If I can ever find a way to stop exhaust/header leaks from coming back all the time I know I could get times down... theres still more to squeeze out of this combo. Heck I just need to try running with some slicks and will probably knock a couple tenths off..... boy am I stubborn.

Are you running out of injector with your combo?

I was actually thinking exactly among the lines of the combo you have.
How does your car run?

If you could have done one thing different (in your current set-up), what would it be?

6sense: Do you have flow numbers of your heads and intake? if you just throw a bigger turbo into your combo, you may cause other problems when using a different chip, different injectors, and so on. You need to know what you CAN flow, and go by the numbers in finding the right turbo for your combo! if you have an 800 cfm turbo sitting on top of a 600 cfm intake, your air flow will all get messed up, plus your fuel mixtures will be off, and so on, and so on! If you have flow numbers, take them to the pro's and ask for their opinion. if your goal is to run 11's, there are a bunch of turbo's that will get you there, but ome are just more efficient, more qualified, and more adaptable. I am waiting on my heads from the shop, but when they are done, I am taking my numbers to precision and I am almost positive the TA64 will be my weapon of choice, but if my numbers dont support the turbo, I am going to find the best one that will!

Good luck to you, and let us know how things fare this season!!! 1/4 mile times should begin to be postin up around now!!!! lol

I've run a TA62 in the stock hotair housing and I currently run a TA64 (the same as a 66 I think) in the 87 housing. With a 4.1 and 3,500 stall it spools very good. I really like the new 60lb injectors. No drivability problems at all. Good luck getting a throttlebody big enough. I'm curious what Lee's doing for a TB.
