The ATSG page 43, says to inspect the sun gear shell splines and to always replace with the new type of hardened sun gear shell. However, there is nothing that specifically says sun gear shell. Since paragraph 38, says to remove the snap ring (639) from the from the sun gear, and the snap is on the rear sun gear (642), and it holds the input drum (640), am I right in assuming that the sun gear shell is the input drum?

I have not noticed any part numbers on any of the parts in figure 78, page 43 of the ATSG. How do I know if I have the hardened part?

Many more questions to follow, I hope the page, ILL NO.'s, and figure NO.'s are a good way to describe things - seems like the ATSG is widely used.

TIA,

Usually the hardened drive shell will be darker in color , Also try to scratch the surface with a awl or pick the un-hardened will scratch easy.

:D

Pete, you call it the "drive" shell - that sounds like the short shaft type part called the gear, sun rear (642) in the ATSG.

I did notice some slight chipping on the inside edge of the splines on the rear sun gear. The large splines on the inside edge of the part that protrudes from the input drum (640).

I have scribed lots of different metals, but with out having a non hardened part to compare, I am not sure that I will be able to tell if I am scribing a hardened sun shell gear - still not sure which of the parts is the "shell"

Thanks,

Thanks Chris.

But is the "shell" the rear sun gear or the input drum or some other part?

I am not clear because the ATSG says sun gear shell splines but does not show the sun gear shell???

After writting this I'm thinking "shell splines" are just the splines on the rear sun gear that mesh with ?________?

Please enlighten me.

the shell is the shell and the sun gear is the rear sun gear.the hi drum drives the shell which is splined to the rear sun gear to provide the reverse ratio independent of the front planet ,the drum holds the shell and rear sun gear stationary to provide second gear ,and the drum grounds the rear sun gear to the rear ring geatrfor third and fourth gears.www.ckperformance.comthe shell and rear sun gear are connected together thru the use of splines .

Yeah what Chris said.:)

Chris has all the parts to beef it up , If you go that route...
:D

I only have the ATSG to go by. The terminology in that guide seems to be a bit different.

"the shell is the shell and the sun gear is the rear sun gear.the hi drum drives the shell which is splined to the rear sun gear to "

The rear sun gear (ILL. NO. 642), has a snap ring (ILL. NO. 639) that holds the input drum (ILL. NO. 640). It sounds like the input drum is "the shell" and it looks like the male tabs on that part fits in to the female notches on what the ATSG calls the direct clutch housing and drum assembly (ILL. NO. 604); I think this is what you are calling the hi drum.

In Summary:

rear sun gear = rear sun gear ----OK

the shell = input drum ------right?

the hi drum = the direct clutch housing and drum assembly ----Right?

Thanks for your patience, just trying to make sure I am looking at the right parts using the part names and #'s found in the ATSG.
