guys this has been a prob for a while with a project car of mine and i think you will all be surprized by the prob. the car did all the above , popping ,surging , detinating, ect.... i changed everything . heres the list coilpack, module, crank scencer, cam scencer, injectors, computer , computer chip, fuel pump . regulator , cam, valve springs, head gaskets, mass air, air temp scencer, fuel press reg, plugs wires, injector harness, wiring harness, all grounds ect... now wana know what was wrong?

the mother f@$*ing altenator!

sound funny! well its not and here is why!

i in the course of checking everything i had the altenator checked it checked good! i took it to 3 differnt places with it off the car and on the car all said it was good... but one bright kid noticed that yes the altenator was good but the amps the altenator was putting out was only 30! a far cry from the 120 amps its supose to put out . thats my story whatcha think .. buddy

also the test needs to be performed while the altenator is on the car..not off . the test they use with it off the car will not tell the amps of the altenator.. they say it will but it wont read it right . trust me i had this prob for about 6 months. dont let a half butted parts man keep your ride down for 6 months like me ..

Could have been one bad/flakey diode in the rectifier that was puting AC on the electrical system, which would freak the ECM out, but still charge the battery (although not very efficiently).

Seen this happen on a few other GM vehicles Ive worked on/owned. Ive actually put an oscilloscope on the alt on my syclone and I get a pretty nasty amount of AC even though the alt is working 100%.

Thats pretty interesting. I'm haveing problems at 10 pounds of boost it would pop and backfire. I changed coilpak, ignition module, plug wires and redid my grounds with the Casper ground kit. I have a brand new cam sensor coming. I'll have to check the altenator out.

One of the rarer failure modes of an alternator is that a diode shorts out, and that allows A/C into the system.

The only real *Alternator Test* is where they use a scope on it and actually look at the diode pattern, trying to test an alternator with just a meter is little more then guessing. It will only tell you if it's basically just toast or bread, nothing in between.

problem fixed

yea guys the battery is an interstate gel cell it was always going dead but we thought it was because the car has three fans on it running when the car is off untill it cools.. three fans are trans, engine oil and radiator .. .. it eas a very hard prob to chase down for sure and i hope it will help some of you guys that have thrown up your hands and decided to drive it easy or pawn it off on someone ele to find the prob.. buddy

the volts were a little low to they were 12.5 -13.0
