SUV's too much for teens

I would say immaturity played the biggest factor. Too immature to realize you shouldn't drink and drive. Too immature to realize you aren't immortal. Too immature to realize driving is dangerous and carries a great deal of responisibility.

Our neigbor's son was just in an accident where he flipped the car w/ three of his friends in it. He went into a turn too fast and got into the shoulder and couldn't re-gain control. Luckily, nobody was hurt seriously. He was extremely shook up and realizes now that driving can have serious consequences if you're not careful.

As far as the SUV being too much vehicle for teens, I think it's too much vehicle for many of the drivers today. I see more one vehicle accidents w/ SUVs than any other type of auto.

Steve.

i'm part of the statistic here, all i can say is thats so true. 70% of my friends can't drive. they have their lisences, but they can't drive a car, riding with them is like a bad rollercoaster ride. the REALLY bad part is they all think there mario andretti. fortunatly, a lot of peopel on the roads are alert and paying attention, and wrecks are avoided that way. but you take their inability to drive, give them a bigger car, and a few beers. you mine as well give out guns in prison.

but there are a lot of people my age that do have suv's and big trucks, and generally there the better drivers, probably from a few close calls.

but still, they can't blame the car for it, i don't care what kind of car you have, it can be driven safe (as long as it stays together) i've driven a semi dump truck before (without the right lisence :D ) and i didnt' get in any wrecks, i didn't have any problems with it, but i have also been driving something since i was probably 4.

I agree fully. SUVs are harder to drive. They ride more car like now than years ago but they still are heavy and tall. Inexperience and or no respect for the limitations of it become very dangerous. They are just not as forgiving as a car for handling or stopping. Worst of all the AWD ones think they are invincable in bad weather. Coming home in a snowstorm Sunday was very difficult to drive. I have an AWD Subaru and was barely able to go 35 on the highway. They weren't plowed and it was icy under the top coating. The snow was blowing in 45mph winds so visibility was very low. 99.9% of the cars were creeping along in the right 2 lanes. Of couse the .1 % ahole in a big SUV came blasting by. It was funny to see him off the road about mile ahead. Luckily he didn't take anyone else with him.

I love how its ALWAYS someone or something else's fault and never the person at fault.

not to say kids are good drivers but I think this is typical media hype. They are hell bent on getting rid of SUV's, they tell you a couple of heart wrenching stories and call it a crisis.

I would like to know if percentage wise deaths and injuries are any more prevalent among that age range driving SUVs compared to those who were in accidents driving cars. You could easily show that suv accidents are on the "rise" being that more and more and more of them are on the road every year hence more are being driven by kids.

That said, kids are idiots.. I hope I wasnt like that when I was a teen but i probably was. I work with them on a daily basis and wow they are dumb and annoying.

Early December a 16 year old in the next town rolled his EXPLODER and died. Speed around a corner was the cause. No mystery there. Too bad, he was a good kid. My bosses kids played LaCross with him.

I don't care if you're driving an SUV, a Pinto, a Sherman tank or a BigWheel tricycle---if you don't point the sumbich in the right place and figure out how to stop it in time, you're gonna crash!!!

(and if yer too stoopid to figure out HOW to point it and stop it, you don't gots no bizness DRIVING it)

No, DRIVING INSTRUCTORS should be doing the telling---that's the whole problem; they're turning loose kids who can't drive, and the vehicle is simply secondary---the girl who crashed that SUV probably would've crashed WHATEVER she was driving!

A brand new 1975 Ford Maverick with a three-in-the-tree, no power steering or power brakes was (is) MUCH harder to drive and control than ANY modern SUV. It's what a zillion teenagers of the '80's drove, and they didn't crash them any more often than teenagers crash SUV's today...

The article several times mentions "driver inexperience", andt the second sentence of the article begins: "Hurrying to catch up to a friend..."

But blame the SUV...<sigh>

I'm with the beer theory. Why is a 16 year old drinking AND driving? Even though I don't encourage underage drinking, I know that I sneaked some drinks when I was 16 but it was generally at a "cool" parents house. We didn't think it was a good idea even then to get caught by the police for being drunk and driving not to mention the safety problems. We stayed in the house or at least in the yard. We need better parenting, not better SUVs.

I'll go along with the booze and natural selection theories personally. If you look at the pics the damage is all in the front. Heh, I've driven an Astro van for 3 years, first and only car. Sure it has problems compared to a real car, most notably the big blind spot in the rear, which is why a lot of those Express vans come with the mirrors in the back corner(s) in a lot of cases. I know what my ride can't and cant do, if I go fast it's in straight lines. If I don't have 4 foot disc brakes that allow me to stop on a dime, I don't ride 3 foot away from someone doin 85. It's like we've had problems with dumb @$$es going out on this road and doing "hill popping" then everyone's like "why did they get killed. Just wants to make me shout at people or something.
