Thought, I'd get that one out there since a lot of people seem to prefer hardtops anymore. :D

Although true that they can be problematic, not many people see them for the pure fun factor. Sure, a high mile car can pose its problems with rust, leaks, and overall structural weakness, but having them off on a fairly hot day, driving on a warm night just 'cruising around' is a blast.

Wish my GN was a t-top car... I'd prolly wear out the locking mechanism. :)

yeah i WISH i had t-tops on mine...

anyone ever heard of getting them put on aftermarket?

i wonder if that would be possible and i would absolutly love to have them... i bet aftermarket ones wouldnt looks that great though... anything would be better than a hard top!

I loved the T-Tops on my '86 GN.

The best money I invested was getting the insert panels that kept the sun from beating down on you in the summer.

T-tops are definately a nice touch. Jack Laswell has an 86 t-top GN that is a high 10 sec street car. It's beautimous.

Ok, here is a time they aren't fun..

Driving down the Interstate and a sprinkle hits the windshield. You think, naw it won't rain will it? Then you see the next exit is 12 miles and then it starts to pour rain. :p

Very true about the weather sneaking up on you. I think when you own t-tops or a convertible you learn to be your own meteorologist. :)

As for the aftermarket t-tops... I've seen G-bodies, including GNs with them. They are a bit smaller then the stockers and from what I understand not as good.

If you really want to go thru with the hassle and have a good person for body work, then you can find a t-top car with a good roof panel and cut the entire roof section and weld it into your car. Of course this requires careful measuring, welding, and removal of glass and finally paint. But if you're willing, it is possible.

If someone wants to do a T-Top install I've got a N/A 83 Regal T-top setup with everything still, or near so. I'd have to look at it to be sure, I got the car off a board member. I need to grab the motor/trans outa it as well as some minor stuff, but other that it'll probably be a "scale car" I'd be willing to work a deal on it, and it's on the way to BG if you're in the chicagoland area or up north. I may do it anyways, I've always wanted to make a "convertible" :D

I am gonna chop off my t-top roof and weld on a hard top sometimt this year.

wow is it really that easy?
i mean you would have to make exact cuts and measurements which i would imagine would be very pricey to do... i cant weld or do bodywork so that sucks...

as far as getting T-tops installed... anyone ever hear of a price on them? why would they be worse than the stock ones? probably just dont seal right or look wise they are worse?

oh well i might just have to sell this car and buy one with T-tops someday!

T-Top owner here and love it at night...

check out this point of view looking down from above...
GN with T-Tops

Ok my version, if it rains or looks like rain, car stays in the garage.

IF raining, and t-tops out, drive really fast, no rain -- think of the wind tunnel at 75 mph.

A friend of mine tried to put his t-top in while driving down the road back in the day... many years ago, the wind caught it and flip it was gone... What was he smoking that day.... smash....

another friend was putting it into his car and dropped one, and no breakage, lucky

as for t-top inserts, please email gnregistry@aol.com if they are still available.

Last year I think I put on about 1,000 miles, normally only 500 - 1,000 miles per year. This year going to GS Nationals and I am driving the GN... can't wait for tolls and testing 0-75mph through IL.

Look for videos after GS Nationals...

If the weather looked threatening or I was on a short trip, I'd throw the t-tops behind the front seats. If I was really unsure, I'd just have the driver's side one off. I used to be able to reach behind me (sitting at a light) grab the t-top, put it back in... and latch it down. Must be careful doing this one!

I also saw a friends GN lose a t-top...

T-tops are close to a convertible but not quite. Less wind but still get the sun in the face. Nothing beats (opinion here) cruising without tops and hearing the turbo spool and everything else is just that much sweeter. Although opening the center console isn't such a good idea at speed. I lost all of my time slips last summer that way. But then again it was 80, sunny, full tank and nothing but cruisin'.

I tried the wind tunnel effect when I got caught in rain w/ the T-tops out, but it was soaking the back seat. (I was dry though) :) Not only that, the drag radials started to hydroplane.

I have a set of aftermarket C&C T-tops available if someone knows anybody with these on their car.

They were a dealer installed option and were the only brand used as far as I know. When done right they look good.

I did exactly what Otto is talking about and chopped my top and restored the car to a hardtop.

So if anyone knows someone with the C&C tops on their car (any G-body) they should put them in contact with me. Replacement seals and tops are IMPOSSIBLE to find. C&C went out of business many, many years ago and I tracked down pretty much the last set of new seals in existence.

Well, I've had...

An '86 GN w/ T-Tops

an '87 GN hardtop

an '86 MCSS w/T-tops

and a '77 'Vette w/ T-tops

Even with the downsides (rattles, leaks, rust potential, etc.) I still prefer a T-top car. BTW, Neither the GN, nor the MCSS ever leaked a drop. The 'Vette was like having a water hose running through the roof! But the seals were old and hardened so I'm sure that was part of it.

My GN has T Tops and right now I'd rather have a hard top car. My car is very rough (bought it that way) and was never garaged until I got it. The interior is terrible. The seats are ripped, the dash is cracked, etc. i can't stand driving in in our hot Phoenix summers, it's noisy, rattles, etc. Doesn't leak though. I like how it looks with the tops off and enjoy an open roof vehicle in good weather, but I don't use them enough to enjoy them. Not only that, but the roofline on G bodies is pretty high and when you take the tops off you really don't really feel the "open air" effect as much as in a sportscar, but the people in the rear seat are getting blasted. My uncle used to have a '74 Stingray and I would borrow it and cruise with the tops off for a whole day. The GN just doesn't give me that feeling......ok, I'll end my rant.
