Probably won't see much of a gain unless you run more than 20lbs of boost. It you run it at 25lbs you will see a few tenths difference. Like 3-4.

Probably about 10HP total up to 21/22psi., from 22 to 26psi. probably 10HP per psi. of boost. :)

Figure a stock turbo is good to 12.00s at 22lbs. A 49 may do an 11.50. But the boost will be at least 25lbs to do that. That is about as good as I have seen on stock motored cars. Realistically 12.20 for a stock turbo car, 11.80 with a 49 with decent boost.

My best time with a TA-49 is listed in my sig. :D This with an unopened block other than valve springs.

How much of an improvement will the TA-49 make over the stock 87 turbo?[/QUOTE]

how fast are you going with the stock turbo if not low 12's it might be a good idea to leave it on an practice tuning

A te44 is bigger than a ta49 right?

No. They are essentially the same turbo. The TE44 has a more efficient compressor inlet that MAY be worth .05 of a second at 25+ psi of boost over a TA49, but otherwise they are interchangeable.

TA49/TE44 are both good to 11.50's at reasonable boost levels with an unopened motor.

I have a question then.

Never realized that the ta49 wasn't that much better then a stock 86/87 turbo, like is being discussed here. So, if the stocker is very close to the ta49, do you need to run bigger injectors then the stock 28#'ers?? I picked up 40#ers when I bought my turbo, because I was told I would need more injector? Are they just needed to run the higher boost levels......above 20#'s?
TIA, Nick.

At 18 psi of boost, you'd be hard pressed to be able to tell the difference between a stock turbo and a TA49. It may not even show up on a timeslip, other than the 49 maybe running a mph more because its less restrictive. Below 18 psi, the stock injectors should be fine with a TA49... but do not under any circumstances turn up the boost.

A stock turbo maxed out at 22 psi of boost should crack a TR into the 11.9s with the stock injectors. Swap in a TA49 with no other changes and you will pop a headgasket. Add 36# or higher injectors and the TA49 will max out around 11.50 @ 25 psi.

A TA49 may only be .2-.4 seconds quicker than a stock turbo, but those are hard .2-.4 seconds to get and you won't get them with the stock turbo in place.

Somebody who is running 13.0's and 18 psi of boost and thinks they will run 11's by bolting on a TA49 (because we all did) needs to forget about that.

Maximize the stock stuff before buying a lot of disapointing mods.

I know im going against the grain here.... and maybe its because at the time i was just using pump gas but when i bolted on my 44 onto a cam only motor (stock heads) at 17 psi it was quite a bit faster than the stock turbo at the same boost. It was only seat of the pants, but it was a very big difference. At the same boost you are still flowing quite a bit more air than the stocker. It is a very good upgrade over stock imo.

I'n not sure if something was wrong with my stock turbo or not( no in and out play)or leaking oil but the best mph I could get on it was 101.89@22 psi. Switched to a TA49 and the next race week pulled 108.44@21psi both were 24/22 timing.

it really depends on the exhaust housing too. if you get a 49 with the .82 housing it will still spool really good, but is good for about 2mph on the top. also the stock compressor is pretty efficient for stock parts, and will dish out quite a bit. its the turbine that is really holding back the stocker. ive personally saw a stock to a precision housing (.76) pick up almost .2tenths corrected et and about 2 mph. personally wouldnt screw with turbos until yours is shot or you do other mods. money would be better spent on a dutt. neck intercooler.
