who sells the better ta 49; john craig or pte finding prices for pte turbos is easy, anybody know what a john craig ta 49 sells for

i dont have either but im pretty sure most people on this board will tell you that when you pay extra for a JC turbo you get what you pay for:) ive read tons of posts about this same subject and this seems to be the general consensus

1kwick6, I have the same setup as you do on my GN and am also beginning to shop for a 49. Of course, as the last post said, the JC turbos are slightly more but come highly recommended. I read many positive posts on John Craig turbos. I just priced a couple different 49 setups from him. $745 with a HD actuator, additional $40 for a polished housing, and $775 for one with a ported elbow for the stock dp. Tim

oh boy...:D

i had a pte 49 on my car and was a great turbo i have sold it and its still going strong today but as others have said John Craigs turbo's are very nice pieces and customer service is much better if you should ever have a problem.

I replaced my stock turbo with a John Craig / Limit Engineering TA49 about 4 months ago. You can't go wrong if you get a turbo from John Craig. It might be a ~little~ more expensive....like $50, but it's worth it.

You'll actually get a better price on one of his turbos from Red Armstrong than if you buy it straight from Limit Eng. I stayed with the Garret exhaust housing on my TA49.....spool up is INSANE with the stock converter.

Craigs turbo's are a piece of art. I took it out of the box and stared at it for 30minutes....WOW. It was a shame to bolt in on the engine...HA. I don't have the reciept in front of me, but I think I paid $649 for the turbo....plus I had to send him a stock garret exh housing to fit to the TA49 since he's out of cores. If you get it through Red, the turbo is drop shipped straight from John Craig anyway. Delivery was fast too....within a week.

Good Luck,
John

I have had turbos from both John and Harry, and both have been excellent and trouble-free.

This baloney about PTE stuff being junk and PTE not standing behind it's stuff is just that. PTE is one of our best vendors, and they are way, way, way cutting edge. Come into the real world, people.

The TA49 was the single best mod I've performed on my car. I have NO traction anymore with this turbo, and it spools like a mother.

I've had turbos from both PTE (TA51) and JC (TA49) - both are top flight vendors that provide excellent service, but I felt that the workmanship was superior with the JC turbo. Plus, my wastegate hole was slightly off on my PTE TA51, but that could have been because of the THDP - I've heard that the pucks were moving around on those pipes depending upon when they were made (according to PTE). Lined up perfectly on the JC turbo for some reason.

Again, this is purely subjective and just my opinion. And opinions help, especially when you're researching vendors.

P.S. Pay John the extra dough and get your compressor housing polished - they polished my garrett housing to a mirror and it wasn't that expensive...

Rich:D

What is the difference between the two vendors turbos anyway? Aren't they the same guts and housings? j/c
