I have a TA49 on an 86GN, its a garrett, but its a .83, not a .63. Anyone have experience w/ this. My trusty GN guru locally advises me to swap to a factory sized garrett .63, and it'll wake the car up. Whats the advantage of keeping the .83 if any? I trust my guy, but I always wanna learn a lil more, other experienced people speak up please!!
Thx

No experience here, but from reading all of the info available, the .83 will have more lag and sacrifices low end power for upper end power, or running a higher stall verter will make up for the lag & loss of low end power.

Wells.......correct assumption. I went from a .63 to an .82 on my 70BB about a year ago. The .63 spools way faster. Much more lively on the street and on the tbrake. Switched to the .82 wanting more top end charge. The .82 gave me a noticeable amount of added lag, but also power from the top of 2nd gear on! Picked up an easy 2 mph in the 1/4, but the 60' suffered a tad bit. For you.....going back to .63 housing is probably the smarter move, unless all you do is race supras from a roll on the street. ;)

Is it a Garrett .82 or PTE?
If its a Garrett, its a tad bigger than PTE's .63 and not a huge deal.

If you have a stock D5 converter and not many mods than it will be laggier than normal. But if you put a 3200 behind it and a Manual Boost Controller the 49 will spool like mad regardless.

The Garrett housings spool a tad faster than the PTE's but the PTE's flow more. I would not worry about it and put your $150 to switch housings into the car with a MBC ( $10 on ebay ) a test pipe etc and get the car spooling faster and making more power.

Thx for the replies,
Dr, I am runnin a Garrett .83, not PTE. I have stock rear-end w/o an aftermarket stall. I am planning on this being a show-street rod car, not a track car. I still would love to race it occasionally, but street is far more important to me...also pulling large wheels and brakes.
The end goal is to be 11.99 , 500whp, on 20" rear wheels. Gonna be tough.
So far the mods include, TA49garrett, 3"DP, 2.5" exhaust, green stripe injectors, and rear disc conversion.
I am still waiting to get Turbotweak chip, new IC, all new suspension.
